(Minghui.org) Ms. Sun Liping has been illegally detained at a detention center since November 17, 2014, the day she was arrested for practicing Falun Gong by officers from the Zhonghan Police Station in Laoshan District, Qingdao City. The lawyer hired by her family visited her on April 22, 2015 and learned that Ms. Sun had already been secretly tried on March 11, 2015.

Ms. Sun's lawyer listed the illegal actions taken against her by the Laoshan District Public Security Department and prosecutor's office as follows:

1. Ms. Sun was held at the Zhonghan Police Station for 3 days, exceeding the legal limit of 24 hours.

According to Chinese law, police officers can interrogate and hold a person for a maximum of 24 hours. Beyond that time, the police must either release the person or transfer them to a detention center.

2. Ms. Sun was forcibly taken to a detention center despite the fact that she did not meet the detention center's minimum health requirements for admission.

Ms. Sun underwent a physical examination at the detention center and the Haici Hospital, where she was diagnosed with heart disease and high blood pressure. Moreover, they discovered an artificial tube that had been inserted into her intestine during a cancer operation performed before she started practicing Falun Gong. Both doctors recommended that Ms. Sun should not be detained, and the detention center authorities concluded that Ms. Sun did not meet their requirement for admittance. However, the police resorted to different channels and forcibly took Ms. Sun to the detention center.

3. Ms. Sun’s home was illegally ransacked.

After arresting Ms. Sun, the police ransacked her home when her family was not at home. They did not give her family a list of the confiscated items, and did not have her family sign any list of items as required by law.

4. Ms. Sun was not given any criminal detention or arrest document.

According to Criminal Law, officers should deliver criminal detention and arrest documents to Ms. Sun herself, which they did not. In addition, they did not identify themselves while interrogating Ms. Sun.

5. Ms. Sun’s arrest was illegally approved.

The Laoshan District Procuratorate did not carefully examine the arrest application and approve Ms. Sun’s arrest. In fact, her arrest did not meet the requirement(s). They approved the police department's application to prosecute her without following proper procedures of examining the application. Ms. Sun's family was not informed of the arrest either.

6. Ms. Sun was illegally tried.

Yu Yong, a Laoshan District Court judge, tried Ms. Sun without issuing a summons to Ms. Sun three days before the trial. Neither did they inform her family. No public notice about the trial and no evidence of wrongdoing was presented. It was indeed a secret trial.

Ms. Sun’s family and lawyer have sued the relevant authorities for violating Chinese law and have requested the release of Ms. Sun.
