(Minghui.org) For practicing Falun Gong, Mr. Ma Fujian was held in the Huantai County Detention Center and later in the provincial Xinkang Prison in Jinan City. His wife and elder brother visited him at Xinkang Hospital on October 12, 2015. Mr. Ma had been on a hunger strike and is on the verge of death.

Only his wife was permitted to see him. She was subjected to a body search and had to leave her cell phone outside the hospital room. Many guards monitored her five-minute visit. Mr. Ma was heavily medicated and could not respond to his wife's questions.

Abused in Detention, Family Not Notified of Sentencing

Mr. Ma Fujian received a letter from the Guoli Town Police Station on September 11, 2015 regarding his one-year detention. He was told to sign the letter, but refused to do so and discarded it.

He was arrested at his home on September 15, 2015. His wife received a call from the county court informing her of a hearing on the same day. She was unable to attend, as she could not find a babysitter for her two children with such short notice.

While held at the Huantai County Detention Center, Mr. Ma went on a hunger strike to protest his abuse by police. He was transferred to the provincial prison on September 30 in critical condition.

Mr. Ma's wife received a call from the provincial prison about her husband being hospitalized and on the verge of death. She called Mr. Ma's brother in Shaanxi Province; only then did they find out that Mr. Ma had been sentenced to four years in prison.

Brother Denied Hospital Visitation

Mr. Ma's brother rushed to Shandong Province to visit his brother after being given permission over the phone with prison officials. When he arrived, however, guards refused to let him see his brother, claiming that they were unable to prove their family relationship.

Mr. Ma's wife and his brother went to the hospital a few days later, where his brother was again turned away. His wife was permitted a five-minute visit.
