(Minghui.org) Mr. Zheng Xiangxing's wife and son went to Baoding Prison again on February 25, 2012, attempting to speak with prison authorities about transferring Mr. Zheng to a different hospital for better medical treatment. They waited from 9:00-10:00 a.m. and were not received. The family felt helpless and distraught. They had to change their plans. They then went to visit Mr. Zheng.

Once in Mr. Zheng's room, they found him very pale and unresponsive, and his condition seemed very poor. The family asked Hou Yongjun, the director of the Baoding Prison Hospital, “Why does he seem worse every day? Also the food you give him is not very substantial.” Hou responded, “We can't transfer him to another hospital because his life is not in danger. This is a hospital rule. It's not up to me.” When the family mentioned that they wanted to have Mr. Zheng's health evaluated, Hou told them that they could only hire doctors locally and not from Beijing. He also warned the family, “You are only allowed to know about his condition and to make suggestions. You cannot ask for anything.” Hou also said, “You only have seven days, as visiting is not allowed after seven days.”

Doctors Ignore Mr. Zheng's True Medical Condition and Deny Treatment and Parole

At 4 o'clock in the afternoon, Jia Tongle of the Baoding Central Hospital Brain Surgery Department; Zhang Yueling, the director of the Ophthalmology Department at the Baoding Central Hospital; and a doctor from the Rehabilitation Hospital went to the prison hospital. After examining Mr. Zheng for an hour, Jia said, “He doesn't need to be transferred. Speaking of life-threatening conditions, it could happen to anyone. Some people have heart attacks and some may have a bad lung. These are considered life-threatening conditions.”

The family asked the doctor from the Rehabilitation Hospital if Mr. Zheng still needed medication. The doctor answered, “He should just take Vitamin B1 and B12, along with plenty of rest to help him recuperate.” Zhang, from the Ophthalmology Department, said that Mr. Zheng was able to see double shadows, thus didn't need any treatment nor to be transferred.

The family felt that the three doctors were not being responsible for the patient and said to them, “If all three of you agree that his condition is not life-threatening, you will be held responsible if anything happens to him!” Then Deputy Warden Fan Jianli said, “I'll take full responsibility for everyone. My words are final. I will take care of Zheng Xiangxing's case. I can make a decision without reporting to my superiors or making an official request.” Hou became upset and said to the family, “I asked the doctors to come. Why did you tell them that?” Before the family left the prison at 6:00 p.m., Fan told them that they should not talk about medical parole until Mr. Zheng recovers from the external injuries.

Background

Mr. Zheng is the owner of a small appliance store at the Tanghai County No. 10 Farm. He and his wife did business honestly, and provided good customer service and delivery. They installed and set up all television sets they sold, making sure each customer was satisfied. Since they ran an honest business, their business was booming. Local people all recommended Mr. Zheng's store for electric bikes and refrigerators, because he never sold counterfeits, and fixed his customers' bikes free of charge. He guaranteed his customers peace of mind.

Li Fuguo, chief of the Tanghai County Domestic Security Division, and more than ten officers from the No. 10 Farm Police Station, led by the director, shortly after 6:00 a.m. on February 25, 2012, got a female police officer to trick Mr. Zheng into opening the door to his home by lying, saying she needed him to fix her electric bike. Mr. Zheng was then arrested. Meanwhile, a group of people confiscated many things from Mr. Zheng's store. The local people became very angry and said that the police were a group of “super bandits.” A petition was signed by 562 local residents who used their thumbprints to request Mr. Zheng's release. Mr. Zheng was widely acknowledged as being a good person who follows the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. This case has generated significant repercussions inside and outside of China.

Sentenced to Ten Years in Prison and Severely Tortured

The Chinese Communist Party's law enforcement agencies involved with this case disregarded the law and sentenced Mr. Zheng to ten years in prison and took him to the Baoding Prison. In only two months, Mr. Zheng sustained a severe head injury in prison. This occurred on October 26, 2012. Mr. Zheng subsequently underwent surgery on his skull. He is now in critical condition and his life is at risk. This has further aroused indignation among local residents. Even more local residents have petitioned with their thumbprints to request Mr. Zheng's release. Some said, “The Communist Party is ridiculous.” A 70-year-old grandmother said, “A good person is sentenced to ten years in prison. What kind of troubled world is this? Society is hopeless.”

A 45-year-old stout man has become completely unrecognizable in two short months after being taken to the Baoding Prison. One of his eyes is badly swollen and bruised, he is very emaciated, and looks like a skeleton lying in bed. His family hardly even recognizes him.

More than 7,000 people have already signed petitions calling for the honest business owner, Mr. Zheng to be released, and to bring the culprits to justice.
