Mr. Wang Shouchen Arrested on Fabricated Charges

Mr. Wang Shouchen lived in the Dalianwan District in Dalian, Liaoning Province. When he was on the way to work at 8 a.m. on July 6, 2012, his car was stopped by several strangers who showed no identification. They ordered him to go with them, but he refused. The strangers then started to try to pull him into their car. Thinking he was being kidnapped, Mr. Wang tried to run away.

Passersby, some of whom were Mr. Wang's neighbors, surrounded him and the people who were trying to take him away and asked what was going on. The strangers said that Wang had committed a hit-and-run accident and they had to take him and his car to the police station. Worried about Mr. Wang, the neighbors rushed to tell his family about the incident.

His family quickly went to all the police stations in town to check the records of hit-and-run accidents, but could not find one that involved Mr. Wang. Officers from Qingniwaqiao Police Division of Zhongshan Police Station in Dalian later ransacked Mr. Wang's home. The family realized that Mr. Wang's arrest was related to his volunteer work installing satellite receivers for New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) in individual households. NTDTV broadcasts uncensored news on Falun Gong and the persecution and other human rights issues in China.

Falun Gong Helped Mr. Wang Regain His Health

Mr. Wang had a serious injury to his windpipe at the age of 11. He had major surgery to fix his windpipe and lungs. His health declined significantly from the time of the accident to 2005. He was very weak, easily got sick with the flu, and also suffered from nephritis, hepatitis B, low blood platelet count, and was suspected of having meningitis. His eyesight was so poor that he couldn't see further than a foot away. Doctors found his conditions too complicated to treat, leaving his family desperate and without hope.

Someone gave Mr. Wang a copy of Zhuan Falun in 2005, and he started to read it while he was still in great pain. He finished reading the book in three days. When he went back to the hospital for a check up a week later, all his symptoms had disappeared like a miracle. It was a miracle, according to him, thanks to the power of Falun Gong.

After regaining his health, Mr. Wang changed the way he saw the world and the way he lived his life. Following and practicing Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, he frequently helped people in the community such as by helping to renovate plumbing or heating systems in their homes. Even people in nearby towns knew he was a good man.

Mr. Wang and His Family Persecuted for Their Belief

Mr. Wang has now been detained for over a year. Many people in the community are disgusted with the authorities for detaining Mr. Wang for volunteering to install satellite receivers, a legal action.

Mr. Wang's 6-year-old son has been hoping every day to see his father come home. He places his father's pillow neatly in bed every night, thinking he will be back to sleep. Oftentimes, the boy ends up falling asleep in tears. Once he woke up very happy from a dream in which his father had returned home, then he realized it was just a dream and broke down in tears.

Mr. Wang's arrest was a painful shock to his parents, and his father experienced a major emotional breakdown.

His 94-year-old maternal grandmother has been terribly worried about her grandson. Her daughter and son-in-law have also been arrested for their belief. While her daughter has been released and is now bedridden due to a serious heart problem, her son is still being detained. The elderly woman insisted on being taken to the police station to see her son-in-law, who had been taking care of her. While she was waiting at the police station to visit him, Liu Jie, the officer in charge of the arrest, told her, “You will not see your son-in-law again.” In the end, the family had to persuade her to go home.

The family has hired a lawyer to defend Mr. Wang, which has resulted in the local police harassing the family. For example, on the evening of April 11, 2013, two police cars and several officers surrounded the Wang home for 24 hours to prevent Mr. Wang's wife, Ms. Liu Yanhua, from providing defense testimony for her husband in court the next day. Mr. Wang's parents were terrified and couldn't sleep for several days. In order to be able to attend the trials and defend her husband, Ms. Liu has had to stay elsewhere before every trial.

Eleven Falun Gong practitioners, including Wang Shaochen, were tried in Zhongshan Court in Dalian recently. As more and more people become aware of the illegality of banning Falun Gong in China, and that Falun Gong practitioners' volunteering to install satellite receivers is legal, the case has become known to higher-ranking officials in the Chinese government and foreign reporters.

The police in Dalian have started to harass the lawyers, beating them, denying them meetings with their clients, and lying to Falun Gong practitioners, saying that their lawyers had quit representing them. The lawyers continue to appeal to protect the legal rights of their clients and themselves.

Practitioners' family members, most of whom are not Falun Gong practitioners, are also harassed by the police. For example, Mr. Wang's aunt, Su Zhengqiu; Ms. Su's husband, Xia Yuanxin; and their child were arrested on August 24.

Liu Jie, the officer in charge of the arrest from Guangming Police Division of Jinzhou District, stated that the order to arrest came from his supervisors. It was believed that the arrest of Su and her family was related to Mr. Wang's case. Ms. Su was released because of a heart problem. She has been bedridden.

Ms. Su's mother, 94, shouted that she wanted to see her son-in-law. She was worried she would never see him again because of her age. Worried about her, her family took her to Guangming Police Station. Liu Jie told her, “You will not see your son-in-law again,” before he drove away. She didn't hear him clearly and sat in the police station to wait to see her son-in-law. Finally, her family worried was about her health and persuaded her to leave.
