Ms. Brynen and Mr. Brynen at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
Ms. Brynen, a dancer and public broadcaster attended the show with her husband as well as her friend, Ms. Waltzer, a CPA, and her husband. Both couples said that they thoroughly enjoyed the show.
"The choreography was wonderful. They were together! We're dancers, so we know when they're in line. The quality of dancing was spectacular," said Ms. Brynen.
Ms. Waltzer agreed saying, "The dancing was excellent."
Referring to the two performances depicting the persecution of Falun Gong in China, Ms. Brynen said, "I know about the persecution, and I had read about this, but this is the first time I've seen it visually."
"I was very moved by that. And I thought that I want to go do some more research and find out more about it."
She remarked about the spiritual content of the show, saying, "It just seems like it's a time of our culture to look at spirituality in a different way. And, I was not expecting to have to find it here. I was expecting traditional culture and to find this depth was very enlightening, and it piqued my curiosity."
Mr. Waltzer said that the costumes "are wonderful," and that they served as an "extension of the dancer in a very natural way, and it didn't feel fabricated. I really enjoyed the dancing and the costumes, and the whole ambiance. The totality of it was just lovely."
His wife added, "I thought the show was fabulous. There was a lot of dramatics in the dancing. I do a lot of dancing myself, and I found the choreographer to be very inventive. And, I loved the representation of the culture through the choreography."
Ms. Brynen concluded by saying, "I was mesmerized. The whole performance was just spectacular!"
Musicology Expert: "It was just so beautiful!"
The audience eager to see Shen Yun at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion of the Music Center.
Louise Spear, a performing arts librarian, also attended the show, and said, "It's just very special to be here this afternoon and hear all the music."
She continued, "Oh, it was beautiful! It was just so beautiful, everything about it. The orchestra was amazing. It was very interesting to hear the Chinese instruments and the Western instruments performing together."
After hearing the erhu Ms. Spear said, "That was very interesting, and it really turned out beautifully." She said she was amazed by "all the sound and all the expression that can come out of what looks like a small instrument."
When discussing the Shen Yun singers, she said, "All of the soloists were amazing," and that the tenor had a "really, really big voice."
Ms. Spear said that although she didn't know much about the various ancient legends that the Shen Yun dances are based on, the dancers and the emcees made it easy to understand.
"Absolutely, they were very expressive. Of course, we had a little hint from the announcers and from the words that were shown on the stage, but I think the dancers spoke for themselves, and you could get the story just from watching the performers.
"I didn't know any of the stories that were told during the performance, so that made it extra interesting and extra special to hear a little bit about Chinese culture," Ms. Spear said.
Ms. Spear ended by saying, "I'd love to come next year."
