(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Chai Shuzhi began practicing Falun Dafa in 1997. She regained her health as a result and her family lived a happy life. In 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started to persecute Falun Gong, Ms. Chai went to Beijing on December 20, 2000 to appeal for justice. She shouted "Falun Dafa is great" in front of Tiananmen Square, and the authorities subsequently sentenced her to one year of forced labor.
In October 2002, local CCP officials held a brainwashing session, and Ms. Chai was arrested and forced to go through brainwashing. She refused to renounce her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and was thus detained. She went on a hunger strike to protest. On October 23, 2002 she was sentenced to three years of forced labor, and transferred and detained in the Harbin City Women's Drug Rehabilitation Center. She endured numerous abuses there. In 2004, she was extremely weak due to being on a hunger strike to protest the brutal mistreatment, and was finally released.
In 2005, there were large scale arrests locally, and more than a dozen practitioners were arrested, and sentenced to prison for up to five years. In order to avoid being arrested, Ms. Chai fled her home. For the past four years, due to living under harsh conditions, Ms. Chai appeared very ill.
In May 2009, Ms. Chai had to return to her mother's home for treatment. The local police kept harassing her. She died on September 10, 2009, with her eyes wide open, unable to find peace amidst the relentless persecution.
