Wang Yanjun from Huailai county, Hebei province was arrested by police in July and has been in poor health. Meanwhile, the national security police from Huailai county sent her to a brainwashing center in Zhangjiakou. Ms. Wang is now detained at a hotel and is monitored by 6 or 7 policemen.
At about 10 a.m. on July 16, 2008, Ms. Wang went downstairs from her home and was arrested by more than 10 people. The perpetrators included Huailai county police station political department head Jia Zhiwei, as well as members of the national security group Li Cai, Meng and others, who were waiting for her. She was taken to the Huailai Police Station and forced onto a tiger bench for over two hours. At about 1:00 p.m., policemen Zhao Guicheng, Li Cai and Mr. Meng sent Ms. Wang to a brainwashing center in the Zhangjiakou Shisanli Labor Camp.
In December of last year, Ms. Wang was once again illegally detained at a county detention center for two months. Abuse suffered there caused her to develop hyperthyroidism, which led to a heart rate of over 190 per minute, putting her in grave danger. She was subsequently released.
From that point on, she remained bedridden due to her health problems. Her heart condition became more serious. On the fifth day, after a strong request from her family members, her husband and child were given a chance to see Ms. Wang under police supervision, who was still unable to get out of bed. Her child was shocked by her condition and broke down in tears.
Wang Yanjun's condition continued to deteriorate. On July 23 her heart rate was over 150 per minute, her whole body twitched and her life was in danger. Police then agreed to send her to a hospital. On the third day in the hospital, however, the police again tried to drag the bedridden Ms. Wang to the brainwashing center. Her family members firmly opposed it, so the police reluctantly let her stay in a hotel.
At that time, Ms. Wang could not walk more than 10 steps without aggravating her heart problem, and she often could not walk even a single step. She had to be transported in a wheelchair or carried around. Sometimes her body would involuntarily start twitching, and this happened for three hours on one occasion. Although the policemen monitoring her saw her illness firsthand, they still insisted on sending her to a brainwashing center. Zhao Guicheng demanded that she give up her beliefs within three months.
