By January 17, 2008, Ms. Li had been on hunger strike for five days. Her family requested that she be examined by a doctor but the labor camp officials refused. That afternoon, her family members went to the Gulou District 610 Office director, Qiu Linxiang, and made their request. Qiu, however, told them to go to the judicial department. Ms. Li's family was not granted permission to see her.
