A festival of music, dance and food from around the world is to be held Oct. 8 in the city's Distillery District to aid the orphans of Falun Gong practitioners in China.
The goal of the all-day event at the Stone Distillery Complex is to raise money to help these children begin a new life in Canada, event organizers -- Global Mission to Rescue Persecuted Falun Gong Practitioners -- said in a news release.
In July 1999, the Communist government outlawed Falun Gong, which had attracted millions of practitioners. Supporters say thousands of Falun Gong followers have been detained and hundreds killed. China denies mistreatment of practitioners.
