Facts of the Persecution
[Jinchang City, Gansu Province] The following are facts of the persecution against Falun Gong practitioners who were employees of the Jinchuan Group in Jinchang City, Gansu Province:
Ms. Shan Siyuan, Ms. Cong Jinxia, Ms. Guo Hong and Mr. Ma Zhigang were illegally sentenced to serve time in prisons or forced labor camps.
Li Bo (gender unspecified) became homeless after being fired from the Jinchuan Group. Li Bo is currently incarcerated in a forced labor camp in Shandong Province.
Liu Zhengyuan (gender unspecified) was twice detained in a detention center for traveling to Beijing and appealing for Falun Gong. Afterwards, this practitioner was thrown into a brainwashing center.
Mr. Zhang Yonglong was detained in a detention center and a forced labor camp for traveling to Beijing and appealing for Falun Gong. Mr. Zhang's mother was a Falun Gong practitioner in her 60's. She passed away in 2003 as a result of the persecution.
Zhao Shenghua (gender unspecified) was subject to illegal detention and brainwashing.
Ms. Wang Xiuying was expelled from the Party after she wrote a letter to the head of the Jinchuan City Committee explaining the truth about Falun Gong. Her oldest daughter was fired from her government organization. The police put a bounty on her son-in-law's head. Ms. Wang's youngest daughter, Shan Siyuan, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.
[Lingyuan City, Liaoning Province] On December 30, 2000, over 100 Falun Gong practitioners unfurled a banner measuring over 99 meters in length at Tiananmen Square in Beijing with the purpose of manifesting the beauty and solemnity of Falun Dafa. Mr. Li Guiyou, a Falun Gong practitioner from Jiahe Town, Xinbin County, Liaoning Province, was one of the practitioners who unfurled the banner. Consequently, he was abducted and detained in Beijing for over 6 months. Afterwards, he was illegally sentenced to three and a half years in prison, and transferred from Beijing to the 4th Production District of the First Prison in Lingyuan City, Liaoning Province where he is still incarcerated.
[Wuhan City, Hubei Province] On the evening of May 3, 2003, Ms. Yao Hui, a Falun Gong practitioner from Wuhan, Hubei Province, was dining with friends at a local restaurant when police officers from the Jiang'an Branch of the State Security Brigade suddenly appeared. They abducted her and took her to the First Detention Center in Wuhan. The First Detention Center refused to take her in because Ms. Yao suddenly showed signs of severe illness. On October 3, 2003, the People's Court in Jiang'an Precinct held a trial against Ms. Yao. Because of the lack of evidence to establish the charge, Ms. Yao should have been released. However, Li Yingjie, a staff member from the "610 Office" (1) in Jiang'an District, pressured the court, the prosecutor's office, and the defense attorney to re-open the case. On January 9, 2004, the People's Court in Jiang'an Precinct held a second trial against Ms. Yao and sentenced her to seven years in prison even though there was no evidence against her. Ms. Yao Hui is currently detained in the First Detention Center in Wuhan.
[Shanhaiguan City, Hebei Province] Zhang Haiqing, a staff member at the Shanhaiguan Detention Center in Hebei Province, often encourages the prison police to torture Falun Gong practitioners with various methods. Because Mr. Shen Kejian, an elderly Falun Gong practitioner in his 60's, was practicing the Falun Gong exercises in the cell, Zhang Haiqing ordered prison police to torture him until he lost consciousness and his handcuffs cut deep into his flesh. Mr. Shen was sent to the hospital for resuscitation. Fearing legal consequences, the prison police notified Mr. Shen's son to bring him home from the hospital, but only after he had paid a ransom in the name of an illegal penalty. In addition, Zhang Haiqing ordered seven to eight prison police to interrogate and torture another Falun Gong practitioner, Mr. Zhang Deyi. Some of the tortures included hanging Mr. Zhang in an iron cage with handcuffs and violently beating the bottoms of his feet with wooden boards until the boards were shattered and his feet had completely turned dark purple and become deformed. Other Falun Gong practitioners who were also subjected to Zhang Haiqing's tortures include: Zhang Guirong (gender unspecified), Shi Yurong (gender unspecified), Lu Xiaohong, and a practitioner named Feng.
[Tangshan City, Hebei Province] In the summer of 2000, Yao Shujun, a female police officer, along with the director of Ankang Hospital, as well as another person named Zhang, administered an unknown drug to Falun Gong practitioners that caused agony and a number of serious symptoms, including: chest pains (the feeling of the heart being grabbed in one's hand), numbness at the base of the tongue, inability to walk straight, anxiety and nervousness, incoherent thinking and behavior, staring blankly, and reduction of memory. Yao Shujun and Zhang administered this unknown drug to more than ten Falun Gong practitioners detained at Ankang Hospital. These practitioners included Ms. Shao Liyan, Ms. Wu Shuxia, Liang Zhiqin (gender unspecified), Ms. Ni Yingqin, Ms. Dong Shugui, Ma Jinhua (gender unspecified), Ms. Zhao Huixia, Ms. Zhang Shujuan, and a schoolteacher.
[Changchun City, Jilin Province] This is an incomplete record of the inhuman crimes committed by Liu Yuan, the head of the "610 Office" at Jilin University. After the persecution began on July 20, 1999, Liu compiled a list of Falun Gong practitioners at Jilin University, detailing each practitioner's activities, including the number of times each practitioner had gone to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong, the number of times each has been detained in a detention center and/or a forced labor camp, and so on. This list became the reference that the "610 Office" used for deciding the direction and intensity of the persecution. So far, the "610 Office" at Jilin University has resorted to but not limited itself to the following approaches to persecute Falun Gong practitioners at the university: threats, forcing practitioners into brainwashing centers, suspending practitioners' salaries for an indefinite period of time, denying practitioners of the chance for promotion, transferring them from their original work organization, suspending them from work, etc. Liu Yuan has also thrown Falun Gong practitioners into brainwashing centers, detention centers, and forced labor camps. Liu targeted schoolteacher Ms. Sheng Jianli as the recipient of the most intense ("highest priority") persecution. Ms. Sheng was abducted by police in 2002 and died as a result of torture in the Shuangyang Precinct Detention Center in Changchun City, Jilin Province between March and April of 2002. Mr. Song Changguang, a college student at Jilin University, refused to give up practicing Falun Dafa, and died as a result of torture at Chaoyang'gou Forced Labor Camp in Changchun City, Jilin Province.
[Dezhou City, Shandong Province] Huaneng International's Dezhou Electricity Plant in Dezhou, Shandong Province is one of the work organizations most active in persecuting Falun Gong practitioners in Dezhou. The former Director of the Plant and Secretary of the Party Committee, Guo Liang, the Assistant Secretary of the Party Committee, Gao Zhenzhi, and Chairman of the Labor Union, Chen Zhiye, ordered their subordinates to work with the policemen to incarcerate Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Yu Lianchun at the First Female Forced Labor Camp in Shandong Province. Ms. Yu died as a result of torture on December 18, 2000.
[Fushun City, Liaoning Province] After a female Falun Gong practitioner escaped from the Fushun Reform Institution in May 2002, the staff there has escalated the persecution against Falun Gong practitioners. More than 20 practitioners detained in the First Platoon once sent forth right thoughts together, and a prison policeman, Wang Jun, marched into their cell with a cattle prod and shocked everyone's head. Besides the excruciating pain, the shock attack also caused injuries to many practitioners' heads and faces. There was another occasion when a Falun Gong practitioner, Ms. Qi Caimei, simply cast a casual glance towards the window of another platoon during tooth-brushing time, but disciplinary staff member, Li Na, stopped Ms. Qi and started to push and pull her until she had torn her clothes. While Ms. Qi protested the treatment, Wang Jun stormed over and started to beat and kick her without even listening to the cause of this incident. Next, Wang Jun brought a cattle prod from downstairs and kept shocking Ms. Qi's head until Ms. Qi reproached him in a solemn and dignified manner.
In June 2002, Wang Jun summoned Ms. Xie Fangyun, a 22-year-old determined Falun Gong practitioner, out of the cell. Then he started to choke her violently. Later on, Wang Jun was transferred to the Intensive Training Unit (2) and promoted to Captain. At the Intensive Training Unit, Wang Jun still directly participates in the torture. He has shocked another Falun Gong practitioner, Ms. Gao Juan, on the head and face with a cattle prod, causing her face to become deformed to the point where she is no longer recognizable.
[Chongqing City] The headmaster of the 18th Junior High School in Jiangbei District, Chongqing severely persecuted Mr. Chen Changjun, an employee of the school and a Falun Gong practitioner. The headmaster had Mr. Chen forced into a brainwashing center and also had another two people monitoring him. He then forced Mr. Chen to pay for the expenses of the brainwashing and the wages of the two overseers. In the beginning of 2001, Mr. Chen traveled to Beijing to appeal for Falun Dafa, and was reported by the school to its supervisory organization. After Mr. Chen returned from Beijing, he was incarcerated at a forced labor camp for two years. When Mr. Chen returned to school for work, the school placed him under surveillance at all times. On February 28, 2004, Mr. Chen made a few photocopies of truth-clarification materials in the school's copying room, and was reported to the Chairman of the School Administration, Liu Zhixing. Liu immediately reported the incident to Zhang Zurong of the school's Security Bureau, and Xiong Kerong, the school's General Secretary. These two then relayed the report to the "610 Office" in Jiangbei Precinct and the Guanyinqiao Police Station. The police and the "610 Office" then abducted Mr. Chen and took him to the detention center and ransacked his home.
Notes:
(1) The "610 Office" is an agency specifically created by the Chinese government to persecute Falun Gong. It has absolute power over each level of administration in the Party, as well as over the political and judiciary branches.
(2) The Intensive Training Unit is a prison within a prison. It is a special kind of solitary confinement. The person sent to the "Intensive Training Unit" is forced to stand for over ten hours daily in a room of 3 to 4 square meters in size.
