In the Nowy Dzienniek New York newspaper, on November 21, 2004, Marek Tomaszewski's article "Pamphlets At Every Corner" appeared, outlining initiatives being taken by Falun Gong practitioners on the streets of Manhattan.
Below is the article:
Falun Gong Protests Peacefully in New York
Pamphlets At Every Corner
They protest without chanting slogans. They are persistent, yet not obnoxious. They stand on city sidewalks and pass out brochures with pictures of tortured adherents of the Falun Gong practice. They can be seen in many different places around Manhattan.
In the morning, one can find Falun Gong practitioners at Penn Station on 34th Street, handing out the newest edition of the Falun Gong Today newspaper. In the afternoon, they can be seen standing in front of New York City Hall in lower Manhattan. In the evening, you can meet them near Times Square and on the main arteries of central Manhattan.
The atmosphere of these protests is always the same: Calm, and full of dignity. Through conversation, Falun Gong practitioners inform people, rather than incite them. Groups of practitioners typically position themselves near photos of their tortured fellows. With their eyes shut, they practice slow motion [exercises].
As it says in publications that Falun Gong practitioners hand to New Yorkers, their approach here is the same as you'll find in many other cities around the world: To let people know, in a peaceful manner, how the communist Chinese government is treating people who believe in this traditional meditation system, people who meditate to attain spiritual harmony with the world surrounding them.
The photos are shocking: Bloody bodies of people murdered or held in Chinese prisons; images of children, whose parents have disappeared in the depths of Chinese police offices; groups of policemen hitting helpless prisoners with batons.
Falun Gong is a holistic method of attaining perfection of mind, body and spirit, which is rooted in three main principles: Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance.
