Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter said he raised concerns with Jiang about U.S. citizens recently detained and tried in China.

[Senate Foreign Relations Committee head Joseph] Biden said he was pleased by Jiang's response that China's judicial system "left much to be desired and needed to be worked on.''

But the senators said they were less satisfied with the president's response to concerns raised about freedom of religion and a crackdown on the Falun Gong spiritual group.

Biden rejects the notion of China as a rising economic and military threat, but he has criticized it on human rights issues, lack of press freedom and arms proliferation.
