Montreal Gazette: Believer held in China

The last time anyone saw or heard from Ying Zhu was when she said goodbye to a friend at a Hong Kong train station.

That was May 10.

This week, the worst fears of her friends were confirmed by information obtained by a Hong Kong human-rights group: the 35-year-old Montreal woman and Falun Gong practitioner was arrested in China on her way to visit her husband and parents.

Ottawa Citizen: Canada limited in helping woman arrested in China

Canada wants an urgent explanation from the Chinese government on the arrest and detention of a Montreal woman during a visit to her parents in southern China.

But the Canadian government has limited options to help 35-year-old Ying Zhu because she is not a Canadian citizen, says a spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs. Mrs. Zhu is a permanent resident of Canada.
