Yan Haixia is a 26-year-old clerk who works at the Shandong Meteorology Bureau. . She was arrested after going to appeal for Falun Gong. She was sentenced to 3 years at hard labor after demanding the right to practice Falun Gong in the detention center. Haixia then went on a hunger strike for 4 days when she was forbidden to practice Falun Gong at the labor camp. Later, she was sent to the Shandong Provincial Mental Hospital where she was forced to take drugs and given injections that caused mental retardation and seizure of her neck muscles. Both her mental and physical health was severely damaged. She was tormented like this in the mental hospital for close to a month and a half. She is now being held at the Jinan Female Prison. Cheng Weihong is a Falun Gong practitioner in the Yanshan district of Jinan City. She was arrested after she went to Beijing to appeal in April 2000. The police from Heping Road Police Station in Lixia district forcefully took her to the Shandong Provincial Mental Hospital. (The Heping Road Police Station can be reached at 011-86-531-8932197).
Meng Fengjun is a 35-year-old Falun Gong practitioner from Zhangqiu area in the city of Jinan. Last year she and her 4 sisters went to appeal peacefully in Beijing. They were arrested and sent back to the local police station. There they were reviled and beaten. They were even publicly humiliated by being forcibly marched through the public streets. In early July of this year, she was detained again at the local police station. She was then handcuffed and mistreated by five policemen. They jammed her between two chairs, tied her two thumbs with electric wire to give her electric shocks (Note: in China the electric voltage is 220V compared to 110V here in America). She was not allowed to eat, drink or sleep for two days while being repeatedly tortured. None of these harsh treatments swayed her determination to practice Falun Gong. In the end, she was sent to cell 503 at the Liuchangshan Detention Center in Jinan.
Four or five Falun Gong practitioners from Gangtun village of Guan County, Shandong Province were arrested when making an appeal in July. They were detained at the Precinct Police Station where they were brutally tortured. Each was forced to kneel down on bricks with their arms stretched out. Then their fingers were beaten with sticks for long periods of time. The police even twisted the flesh of a female practitioner with pliers. Her clothes were soaked with blood.
In the Lanwo village of Guan County in Shandong, the local police station arrested 21 practitioners for practicing Falun Gong. They were forced to kneel on bricks with their arms stretched out, and each hand holding a brick. Then a bowl full of boiling hot water was placed on top of their heads. More boiling water was added whenever the water spilled out. The police also used electric prods to apply shock torture to seven Falun Gong practitioners.
Liu Hongxiang is a worker at the Second Petrochemical Plant in Jinan. The plant fined him 2,400 Yuan (which is about 5 months salary for an average worker in China) because of his appealing effort. Then, at the end of July, he was arrested after he spoke the truth about Falun Gong to the general public. He is now in jail at the Licheng Police Station in Jinan.
In mid July, a couples home was ransacked by the Luokou police station for distributing teachers new articles. They were detained for a month. Their VCR and tape recorders were confiscated as "evidence of crime". (The Luokou Police Stations phone number is 011-86-531-5704903.)
In early July, a Falun Gong practitioner couple living in the Tianqiao district of Jinan City was taken into custody for making an appeal while their home was searched and ransacked. Their personal computer and photocopier were confiscated as "tools of crime".
A clerk working at the Jinan Langchao Corporation was fired in July 1999 simply because he refused to sign the guarantee letter for stop practicing Falun Gong.
A clerk working at the Jinan branch of the Bank of China was forced to resign at the end of July due to persistence in practicing Falun Gong.
