Mercury News: Hundreds march in S.F. to protest persecution (Excerpt)

With a heightened sense of urgency, a sea of about 500 Falun Gong practitioners, joined by Rep. Nancy Pelosi, marched through downtown San Francisco and gathered at Justin Herman Plaza on Friday to peacefully raise their voices against the continued persecution of Falun Gong members in China.

Pelosi told Falun Gong followers --sitting cross-legged atop carpeted mats -- that both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives had unanimously passed resolutions condemning China's violent persecution of Falun Gong.

"We are here in solidarity with Falun Gong," said Pelosi, who represents San Francisco. "We must speak out against the severe human rights violations in China. And we have asked President Clinton to take every opportunity to convey those concerns to the government of China."
