Ms. Xin Shurong

Ms. Sun Rongxiao

Ms. Xin Shurong, of Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, died on November 16, 2024, two months shy of her 67th birthday. Her bedridden husband Mr. Sun Rongxiao, around 72, struggled to care for himself. More than a year later, his life is hanging by a thread. He’s in and out of consciousness. He has a urinary catheter, and his room reeks of a pungent, acrid stench of urine. His skin has turned dark, especially on his buttocks. Despite his condition, the Qitaihe City Police Department still ordered him to send them a weekly picture of him staying at home.

The police didn’t loosen their grip of such a defenseless man because they feared he might go out and raise awareness of the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong. They had gone after Mr. Sun and his wife numerous times in the past for the couple’s steadfast faith in Falun Gong. Ms. Xin’s death happened after she and her husband were last arrested on February 28, 2023.

Ms. Xin, born on January 18, 1957, and Mr. Sun, born in 1954, received a phone call from the Taodong Police Station on February 28, 2023, asking them to pick up the Falun Gong materials confiscated from them during an earlier arrest. They went, only to be arrested upon arrival.

After they were released some time later, Ms. Xin and Mr. Sun went into hiding one after another to avoid further arrests. Both of them suffered declining health while living in exile. Mr. Sun later returned home. As his health kept declining, Ms. Xin also returned home to care for him. The hardship of life plus the relentless pressure from the persecution eventually claimed her life on November 16, 2024.

Ms. Xin’s passing capped decades of persecution for practicing Falun Gong. She and Mr. Sun were previously arrested on June 14, 2002, while they were still living in Boli County, which is under the administration of Qiqihar City. The arresting officers from the Boli County Police Department, including Bai Yugang, confiscated over 100,000 yuan worth of valuables from the couple’s home.

Ms. Xin was interrogated at the police department. The police twisted one of her hands behind her back to be cuffed together with the other hand pulled over her shoulder. After several hours, she lost consciousness and twitched on the ground. The police sent her to the hospital after 3 p.m. At 11:30 p.m., she was taken to the Boli County Lockup. The police later moved her to the Qitaihe City Detention Center, but took her back to the lockup after two weeks.

Ms. Xin suffered a heart attack on July 31, 2002. Captain Jiang Dongchun refused to release her on bail that day until the EKG indicated that she had no pulse or blood pressure.

Mr. Sun was also interrogated with torture following his arrest. He was held at the Boli County Police Department for four days. After that, he was taken to the Qitaihe City Police Department and interrogated for a whole night. Officers Chen Xiang and Chen Longcan forced him to squat until he fainted. They also smoked non-stop to make Mr. Sun, a non-smoker, uncomfortable. They did not give him any food or allow him to use the restroom or sleep. He felt dizzy and muddle-headed.

Mr. Sun was then put in the Qitaihe City Second Detention Center. Seventeen days later, he was moved back to the Boli County Lockup. On August 1, 2002, he was taken to the Boli County Detention Center.

The Boli County Court sentenced Mr. Sun to four years at an unknown time, and he was admitted to the Qitaihe City Prison on July 15, 2003. He suffered severe diarrhea and became emaciated in days. Yet the guards still forced him to do intensive labor without pay. He was so weak that he didn’t have the strength to carry a wash basin.

In late September 2003, Mr. Sun was transferred to the Mudanjiang Prison. After some time at the strict management team, he was assigned to the first division. Eight inmates were assigned to monitor him around the clock. He refused to write statements to renounce Falun Gong and was savagely beaten on two occasions by inmates Zhu Dianhua, Liu Zhijun, and Ren Shuwei.

In December 2004, Mr. Sun was beaten twice in four days. The first time he had injuries all over his face. The second time multiple inmates kicked and punched him so hard that he rolled on the ground in pain. Division head Yan Shanming, instructors Li Jiezhi and Li Wei, captain Dong Yujiang, and guards Li Yuhong and Wang He turned a blind eye to the beating.

Mr. Sun was finally released on June 13, 2006. He and Ms. Xin moved to Qitaihe City, only to face continued persecution. Ms. Xin was arrested in 2015 and detained for some time. She was talking to someone about Falun Gong one November morning in 2019 when a police cruiser pulled over to her. Three agents came out and pushed her into their vehicle. They took her to the Xincheng Police Station and restrained her in a tiger bench. They demanded to know where she got the Falun Gong materials in her bag.

Chief Liu Yazhou kicked her hard. She still refused to answer his questions. A bit past 3 that afternoon, the police took her to the restroom and threatened to strip her naked, waterboard her, and freeze her to death. They bragged that even if she died, it’d count as a suicide. One officer pushed her to a corner and kicked her shins. He then pushed her down and yanked her up repeatedly. She still remained silent and the police took her to a detention center. She was released ten days later.

Eighteen plainclothes officers showed up at Ms. Xin’s home at 7:20 a.m. on July 11, 2022. Two of them held Mr. Sun while the others searched the place, taking away over 40 Falun Gong books, a photo of Falun Gong’s founder, three computers, two printers, seven packs of printing paper, two paper cutters, and some cartridges.

The police manhandled Mr. Sun to the police car. When Ms. Xin, who had fallen and severely injured herself just days before during a shower, tried to stop them, they shoved her. The police were going to arrest her, too, but relented. They hung around for another 12 hours, questioning her on where she got the Falun Gong materials and office supplies.

Mr. Sun was released that evening. Both he and Ms. Xin were put under residential surveillance for six months. They were arrested one more time on February 28, 2023. Ms. Xin died on November 16, 2024, and Mr. Sun is fighting for his life.
