(Minghui.org) An 84-year-old woman in Fuzhou City, Fujian Province, was recently sentenced to two years and five months for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Wang Xiuqin was arrested on February 12, 2025, by the Cangshan District Domestic Security Office agents. They raided her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books and related materials. Due to her high blood pressure, she was released on house arrest.
Ms. Wang wrote to the police several times, demanding the return of her Falun Gong books. The surveillance cameras on the streets recorded her stepping outside of her home and going to the post office. Her letters to the police were intercepted.
Wei Fuyu, secretary of the Cangshan District Political and Legal Affairs Committee, ordered local officers to harass and monitor Ms. Wang. They installed surveillance cameras facing her apartment and put up posters slandering Falun Gong in many buildings in her neighborhood.
Lei Meifa, director of the Cangshan District Domestic Security Office, and a few more officers broke into Ms. Wang’s home on July 14, 2025, and took her to the Fuzhou City Second People’s Hospital for a physical exam. She was admitted to the Fuzhou City Second Detention Center soon after.
The Cangshan District Police Department approved Ms. Wang’s arrest on August 21, 2025, and submitted her case to the Minqing County Procuratorate, using the surveillance videos and her letters to the police as evidence against her.
The Minqing Court appointed a lawyer to represent Ms. Wang. They didn’t inform her family of her hearing on October 9, 2025, until the day before. She was tried via a virtual hearing at the detention center. The judge convicted her in late January 2026. She is still held at the detention center.
Past Persecution
Ms. Wang began practicing Falun Gong in 1998, together with her daughter, Ms. Ye Qiaoming. For upholding their shared faith and raising awareness about the persecution, they have been repeatedly arrested and detained.
Ms. Wang and Ms. Ye were seized by Duihu Police Station officers on October 14, 2000. Ms. Wang was released on bail. Ms. Ye was detained for over ten months, and she was given a 1.5-year labor camp term on April 23, 2002.
Ms. Wang was arrested again on March 5, 2001, and detained for 15 days. She was arrested another time in September 2001 by agents of the Cangshan District Political and Legal Affairs Committee and taken to a brainwashing center. While visiting Ms. Ye on November 4, 2002, she was arrested and detained for 15 days. She was taken back to the brainwashing center on October 10, 2003. Following another arrest on April 4, 2007, she was interrogated for eight hours while restrained in a metal chair and detained for 15 days.
Ms. Wang and Ms. Ye were arrested together on September 16, 2009. They were tried by the Cangshan District Court on April 9, 2010. Ms. Wang was sentenced to four years, and Ms. Ye was given three years with four years of probation. Ms. Wang appealed, and the appeals court changed her prison sentence to probation. Yet the authorities still took her back into custody at the Fuzhou City Second Detention Center on December 12, 2011, and transferred her to the Fujian Province Women’s Prison three days later.
While in prison, Ms. Wang was given unknown drugs, forced to kneel for extended periods, held in solitary confinement, deprived of sleep, and forced to work without pay. She was released on November 17, 2013.
Ms. Wang was arrested again on July 7, 2017. She was released that evening. She was arrested again in August 2023 for mailing letters to officials of the Fujian Province Propaganda Department, urging them not to participate in the persecution. She was detained for over a month.
