(Minghui.org) The Dalian City Intermediate Court in Liaoning Province ruled on December 25, 2025 to uphold the 1.5-year prison sentence of a local woman for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since July 1999.

Ms. Meng Xianfang, 63, was arrested on March 2, 2025, and wrongfully convicted six months later. Her brother was detained for ten days before her trial on July 23, 2025.

Brother Arrested for Seeking Justice for Her

Ms. Meng’s brother, Mr. Meng Xianqi, in his late 60s, learned of her arrest in late March 2025 and soon hired a lawyer to visit her at the detention center. He also called for her immediate release because she broke no in law in exercising her constitutional right to freedom of belief and pursuing good health. Ms. Meng took up Falun Gong in May 2010 and soon recovered from her decades-long colitis, gastritis, mastitis, breast lumps, and breast hyperplasia.

Mr. Meng went to the Shahekou District Procuratorate on May 12, 2025, to submit a request for the legal basis for the prosecution of his sister. Prosecutor Yang Fang refused to accept his request and directed him to seek approval to submit the request from the Shahekou District Police Department. An officer surnamed Yin took the request and accused Mr. Meng of “defaming a former CCP leader.”

Yin claimed that the government had banned Falun Gong, and Mr. Meng retorted that Jiang Zemin, the former CCP leader, launched the persecution of Falun Gong without any legal basis because China’s law-making body, People’s Congress, never enacted any law against Falun Gong.

Yin summoned the Nansha Street Police Station officers to arrest Mr. Meng. They gave him ten days of administrative detention for disrupting social order. He found out later that Yin had recorded their conversation without his knowledge.

Mr. Meng’s family rushed to the police station to seek his release, but to no avail. He was taken to the Dalian Third Hospital for a physical exam at 9 p.m. and then admitted to the Jinnan Road Lockup. He was released on May 22, 2025.

Upon returning home, Mr. Meng faced constant harassment from the local police. Officer Mai ordered him to report to the local street committee once every month or they would “visit him at home again.” He had no choice but to comply. Under the directive of the police, the street committee took his picture and forced him to press his fingerprints on a blank piece of paper.

Sister Sentenced After a Virtual Hearing

Ms. Meng’s case was later assigned to the Ganjingzi District Court. A virtual hearing of her case was held on July 23, 2025. She testified in her own defense and Mr. Meng, who served as her non-lawyer defender, entered a not guilty plea for her. At the end of the hearing, he asked to see the court proceedings but was rejected.

The court announced on September 2 to sentence Ms. Meng to one and a half years with a 10,000 yuan fine. Her brother filed an appeal on her behalf, but it was rejected on December 25, 2025.

Ms. Meng is still held at the detention center at the time of writing.
