A 74-year-old resident of Duchang County, Jiangxi Province died in 2023 after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Hu Huoying, a retired worker of the Duchang Shipyard, felt her world had collapsed when her two sons both drowned in the 1980s. Her health also declined. After she took up Falun Gong in July 1997, she rekindled hope in life and recovered from her heart disease, slipped disc, and stomach issues. She held firm to her faith when the communist regime started to persecute Falun Gong in July 1999. In the next two plus decades, she was repeatedly arrested and given one forced labor term and two jail terms.

Ms. Hu was first arrested on July 3, 2000 when she appealed for Falun Gong in Beijing. She was taken back to Duchang County 15 days later and detained for one month. Another arrest followed on December 21 that year with her detained for another three and a half months. She was also fined 2,000 yuan.

The police seized Ms. Hu from home on April 8, 2005 and held her at the Duchang County Detention Center for one month. They then took her to the Jiujiang City Labor Camp to serve a one-year term.

Ms. Hu’s husband was ill and bedridden at the time. Seventy-eight of her neighbors and colleagues signed a petition seeking her release, but the request was denied.

Ms. Hu’s husband died in July 2007, at the age of 60. Less than one week later, the police attempted to arrest Ms. Hu again and relented after her neighbors condemned them for persecuting such a law-abiding citizen.

Ms. Hu was arrested again on February 29, 2008 and later sentenced to four years in prison. She almost became blind after repeated abuse at the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison. She was released ahead of time in July 2011, only to be arrested on August 4, 2012 for talking to people about the persecution. She was sentenced to another four years and admitted to the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison on February 4, 2013.

The prison guards again subjected Ms. Hu to various forms of abuse and extended her term by several months, to November 23, 2015. Four agents from the local police station and the 610 Office went to the prison that day to watch her. She returned home with her adopted daughter.

The police harassed Ms. Hu three times around March 30, 2017. The relentless persecution eventually claimed her life in 2023 (exact time unknown). For details of her persecution, see the related reports below.
