(Minghui.org) I started to practice Falun Dafa in 1997 while I was in college in China. Before that, like many young people at that time, I enjoyed reading martial arts novels and watching television dramas. During that period, I had a hard time concentrating and my mind often wandered. I then developed an interest in qigong and read numerous books and magazines on the subject.
When I had the opportunity to read the precious book Zhuan Falun in 1997, I distinctly felt it when all the random thoughts in my mind suddenly vanished. I realized that everything said in the book was true and that it was Master Li who purified my mind. Thus, I began to practice Falun Dafa.
At that time, the university provided us with a space where Falun Dafa practitioners from the university and surrounding areas could freely study the Fa, practice the exercises, and exchange experiences. We even held an experience-sharing meeting once. Eventually, I graduated and joined the workforce.
The persecution of Falun Dafa in China began in 1999, and I subsequently lost my job twice because I followed the teachings. When I arrived in the United States in 2012, I quickly found a job in the media so that I could clarify the truth.
Working in the media requires a lot of time, but I managed to spend my Saturdays with fellow practitioners putting up Shen Yun posters to promote their performances. The following are some encounters I had while puttng up posters.
“God Bless You!”
I went into a small hair salon and saw an elderly woman waiting for a haircut. She asked if I was there to get a haircut, too. I showed her the poster and told her that I was promoting Shen Yun. She told the shop owner why I was there, and he readily agreed to allow me to put up the poster and leave some flyers about the show.
While putting up the poster, I told the woman that Shen Yun is based in New York and that its goal is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture and showcase China before the communist era. She was very moved and said, “God bless you!”
Perhaps the Dog Wanted Its Owner to See the Show
I was standing in front of a store when a large dog came up to me. It had kind eyes, but because of its size, I still took a step back. That made the dog’s owner laugh and quickly say that his dog was very friendly.
I went into the store and hung up a poster. When I came out, the dog came up to me again, which surprised me. The dog’s owner smiled again, so I handed him a Shen Yun flyer. He looked at it and said, “This is great!” Perhaps the dog was trying to save its owner by nudging me to give him a flyer.
Rewarding Encounter at an Intersection
While I waited for a traffic light to change, a lady said hello to me. I handed her a Shen Yun flyer. When she took it, I noticed her arms were covered in tattoos. She read the flyer, turned to her husband next to her, and said “We should go and see this.” Her husband read the flyer, too, and I told them about Shen Yun. They both both seemed very happy. They made my day, and I moved on to another store.
Promoting Shen Yun at Car Dealerships
We went to an area where there were several large car dealerships. I met a salesman who greeted me pleasantly, and I showed him the Shen Yun poster. He said he was planning to see the show, so I showed him the poster and flyer, and briefly talked about the show. I said that we would like to put up posters to promote Shen Yun. He told me to speak with the manager, who turned out to be very friendly and agreed to help put up the posters and allowed us to leave some flyers.
I visited a second car dealership, where the manager also agreed to display posters and let us leave some flyers. On the way out, one of the sales associates saw the poster and joked about wanting free tickets. I told him a bit more about Shen Yun and why I volunteered my time to promote it. I encouraged him to learn more about the show online and said I hoped to see him there.
A Shen Yun Fan
We often hang posters in laundromats. A man came up to me in one laundromat, and I told him about Shen Yun. He said he had seen the show, so I gave him a flyer and asked him to recommend it to his family and friends, which he gladly agreed to do.
But then he asked me for a poster. Because the posters are quite large, we usually only give people flyers. I was surprised when he said that he had been collecting Shen Yun posters for two years and that he kept them all at home. It turned out that he was a Shen Yun fan, so I gave him a poster and wished him a bright future.
I have to walk a lot to put up posters, and sometimes I get a little tired. But it is all worth it when I see people’s joyful expressions after they learn about Shen Yun.
