(Minghui.org) Since my earliest memories, I have pondered the reason behind human suffering in this world. As time passed, this question continued to linger. What is the purpose of life? Where do people come from? Where do they go?
I never found a satisfactory explanation. In the meantime, the pressure at work, along with human desires and prolonged unhappiness triggered frequent chest pains, shortness of breath, dizziness, and physical weakness. I was forced to rest after work every day before I could start doing the housework. The inability to determine my true motivations in life, along with an unwillingness to live a mediocre life, contributed to my mental quandary.
In August 1995, my life changed dramatically after I read the book Zhuan Falun. Dafa opened my long-lost memories and showed me the reason behind my existence—I had been waiting for Dafa to save me! I also learned that people in this world suffer to pay back their karmic debts. I found this and many other answers to life’s questions in Zhuan Falun.
Like a lost child who had found the way home, Dafa’s light guided me through the darkness and changed how I saw the world. After discovering the meaning of life, my heart overflowed with newfound happiness, making me feel like the luckiest person in the world.
I would go to the practice site every morning to do the exercises before work. After just a few days, I saw a visible improvement in my health. Walking was a breeze, and I was filled with endless energy and vitality. My previous dizziness, chest tightness and shortness of breath disappeared, and I knew Falun Dafa’s Master had purified my body.
Fellow practitioners at the same practice site also found their illnesses were disappearing. The effects continued to last, and I felt light and illness-free even during flu seasons. The improvements in body and mind did not go unnoticed by those around me, who envied my good fortune.
Change in Mindset, Taking Fame and Fortune Lightly
I am a medical professional in a hospital. In today’s society, it is normal for people to compete with, cheat, and scheme against each other. Because I was introverted and simple by nature, I did not cause trouble or fight with anyone. While my bosses and colleagues commended my good character, according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, I was actually far from being a truly good person. After comparing myself with the principles of Dafa, I discovered my negative traits. I acted cultured on the outside, because I knew I could not win in a fight and I wanted to save face. In reality, I was jealous of any unfair treatment and passively resisted, casting mean looks while saying nothing.
When my previous department started hunting for someone to fill the position of deputy head, an older colleague began to compete fiercely. Based on my age and education, I was the logical choice to be promoted to that position. In comparison, my colleague fell short in terms of education and work ability. Yet she secretly made things difficult for me at work and even said bad things about me to the boss in order to gain an edge.
When my classmate found out, she advised me to give gifts to my boss. But I found I just couldn’t take advantage of a personal relationship or go through the back door to please my boss in order to gain something. I could only work hard, to the best of my abilities, but I felt helpless because I still desired fame and fortune. As we competed with each other like this for several years, my physical health continued to decline.
After obtaining the Fa, I realized my purpose in life was to return to my true self. After a lot of study and applying Dafa’s principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, I gradually rectified how I saw and treated the other people in my life and was able to let go of my desire for fame and fortune in this mundane world. Guided by Dafa, I no longer resented the competing colleague who had made life hard for me. After giving up this meaningless struggle for fame and fortune, I experienced an overwhelming sense of liberation and relief, like a heavy burden had been lifted from my body. A few months later, I was transferred to a newly-established department in our hospital.
Practicing Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance at Work and Spreading the Truth about Falun Dafa
As a medical professional, it is my duty to save the dying and heal the injured. As a Falun Dafa practitioner, I have an obligation to tell people the truth about the persecution of Falun Dafa in China. This new department specializes in providing customized treatment for people from all walks of life, and, through this, I have met public security officers, judicial personnel, industrial and commercial giants, teachers, and reporters. The nature of our work encourages prolonged contact with the patients and their families, which in turn facilitates my truth clarification.
I am responsible for overseeing the main operations of this department. My professional ability and good service have encouraged many patients to stay on and continue treatment. Even patients who were treated in other hospitals came knocking after hearing about our good service. In reality, I think those who come are eager to hear the truth about Falun Dafa. I find opportunities to clarify the truth to them and present them with truth-clarification materials and CDs, and most are able to accept that Falun Dafa is good and withdraw from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its youth organizations.
One day, a seriously ill man was admitted to our hospital. He had gone to a large hospital in Beijing, but the doctors there sent him home after assessing his condition, stating there was no value in further treatment. On the way home, his condition deteriorated so badly, he appeared on the verge of passing away. His worried family detoured to our hospital in the hope he could recover enough to return home.
The man, who was in his 40s, was in a semi-comatose state, but I quickly leaned over and said into his ear, “Can you hear me?” When he nodded, I asked him to silently recite “Falun Dafa is good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good,” as this could save his life. I then asked him, “Did you join the CCP when you were in school?” When he replied that he had been in the Young Pioneers, I told him, “If you withdraw from this organization, your health will improve. Do you agree to withdraw?” He agreed.
Because his condition was so serious, it took an entire hour to stabilize him. After explaining his situation to his wife and sister, I advised them to recite “Falun Dafa is good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good.” The following day, his sister greeted me in the corridor to tell me that the two auspicious phrases were so effective that her brother had drastically improved. I told her, “Falun Dafa is here to save people. Don’t believe the lies you see on TV. The self-immolation on Tiananmen Square was staged by the regime to frame Falun Gong. The self-immolators themselves were not Falun Gong practitioners.” The patient and his family members accepted the truth about Falun Dafa, and the man made a swift recovery. His health improved so much that he was able to come to our hospital for follow-up visits on his own.
I met a lady being treated in our department who worked as an accountant in a government agency. Her husband and son often accompanied her, and I discovered her husband worked at the Procuratorate. I seized the opportunity to clarify the truth to them. At first her husband resisted my efforts and challenged me with CCP propaganda, but after a long period of contact, he slowly began to change. One day, the lady’s son told me, “I think what you tell us about Falun Gong makes sense. Give my mother your books and materials so she can read them.” I saw their desire to learn more about Dafa, so I gave them a CD with recordings of Master’s Guangzhou lectures. Thereafter, whenever I asked the patient’s husband for information about the procuratorate staff who participated in the persecution, he would tell me willingly.
I also encountered a police officer from a forced labor camp, whose son was being treated in our department. This was during the height of the persecution, and I kept clarifying the truth to her, advising her that treating Dafa practitioners well would bring blessings and that believing in the goodness of Dafa could change a person’s fate. In turn, I learned about the difficulties she faced. Her husband had passed away, and she was responsible for her seriously ill son’s medical bills. Because her salary was insufficient, she was forced to borrow a large sum from debtors. Through our conversations, I saw that she had a kind side. Sometimes I would ask her to help those illegally detained practitioners, and she would try her best within the scope of her authority. She gave me updates on them and even found opportunities to help secure their release.
Below are a few other experiences I encountered while at work.
1. Helping with Sincerity and Warmth
Once, a patient came for treatment unaccompanied by his family members. All of a sudden, he began to projectile vomit. The vomit went all over the place and smelled terrible. Everyone nearby edged away and covered their mouths and noses. I immediately went over to help clean up the mess, which was greatly appreciated by those present. The man’s daughter soon arrived, learned what I’d done, and came to express her gratitude in person.
Whenever I am on duty, I try to pour water, buy food, and manage bill payments for patients who are on their own. These people are in difficult circumstances, and I want hem to feel a sense of warmth. Through these interactions, I build a sense of familiarity, which allows these patients to accept the truth about Dafa. I also use Dafa’s principles to enlighten and encourage my patients to live meaningfully.
2. Refusing Gifts
We use medical equipment for our treatments, which means commercial dealings with merchants. In a highly competitive market, merchants promote their products in the hope of gaining more business. They also give rebates, holiday gifts, or red packets to build good relationships. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, a sales representative tried to give me a red packet of cash. When I refused to accept it, he told me, “We give everyone one, not just you.” I continued to refuse on the grounds of my faith. I also told him the facts about Falun Gong, and he agreed to quit the CCP. He then said, “If you don’t take this, I won’t be able to face my boss. He will find my ability lacking.” Without waiting for my reply, he put down the red packet and left. It would have been embarrassing for him if I’d returned the money, so I used it to buy him a gift and advised him not to do this in the future. Having understood my intentions, this sales representative stopped offering me red packets.
Some patients want to give me gifts, but I have refused to accept any of them. In situations where it is difficult to refuse, I buy gifts and give them back to them.
3. Adherence to Moral Principles
In the early years when there was no medical insurance, it was difficult for the average family to afford medical care. Those in poor financial situations had to give up treatment or live frugally to pay their medical bills. Some even went deeply into debt. I sympathized with the difficulties they faced but had to adhere to charge the official fees. A patient once asked me if she could pay me privately, so I could pocket the money, and she could pay less for treatment. When I refused, she said, “I’m offering this because I know you’re a nice person. I’ve done this before, and nobody has refused me.” I replied, “I practice Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Wouldn’t this go against my principles? My faith requires me to be truthful and I can’t change it. I can help you if you have other difficulties, but not in this regard.”
4. Helping an Old Man Who Fell in the Snow
One day, just as I was leaving for home, I saw an old man lying on a snowbank next to the hospital. It was very cold, and I debated whether or not to help him. I had heard cautionary tales of people who had offered a helping hand to an elderly person who had fallen, only to then be blackmailed. But as a cultivator, I could not just stand by. If he stayed on that pile of snow any longer, his life would be in danger.
When I tried asking, “What’s wrong, Sir?” the old man let out a big sigh. I tried to lift him up, but he was too heavy for me. When I asked him if he had a phone, he pointed to his pocket. I quickly took it out, called his home, and told his family member about his situation. Just then, someone from the pharmacy in my department passed by. I asked him to help lift the old man up, and when he hesitated, I could tell what he was thinking. “So foolhardy! To intervene when this could be a scam.” But he still helped me lift the old man up, and we turned him over to his family when they arrived.
5. The Dean’s Apology
The provincial government once visited our hospital and picked our small team for an inspection over a weekend. When I received the news from our hospital director, I rushed to the hospital to confirm our facility and records met requirements, including whether the treatment rooms and placement of items were correct, and whether our medical and disposal records were complete. After I’d tidied up the loose ends, I ran into the dean. He said, “You have worked hard, coming in even though it is your weekend off.” I felt a little embarrassed and replied, “It’s my duty to ensure we pass the inspection.”
He then apologized to me: “It’s my fault for not insisting the hospital give you a promotion. You would have been if you had given up your faith.” I reassured him, “Dean, it doesn’t matter. Under such circumstances, I can understand your difficulties. Thank you for thinking about me, but I am a cultivator. Whether I occupy a high position or not, I will continue to do my best for our patients. These are basic professional ethics I have to abide by.” The dean knew the truth about the persecution of Falun Gong, as I had given him a copy of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party when it was first published.
The CCP has persecuted Falun Gong for over 20 years. During this time, I was illegally detained four times, forced to flee home twice, and had my ID card confiscated by my work unit for six years. My requests to go overseas for further studies were denied. My family members suffered along with me, but because they understood the truth about Dafa, they continued to support me in my cultivation. While I was detained, my family worked to rescue me, hiring a lawyer and using legal channels to challenge the persecution.
Throughout my years of cultivation, I have followed Master’s teachings and followed the requirements of a Dafa practitioner. Compared to diligent practitioners, I know I am far behind. But Master continues to protect me during difficult times, helping me stand up whenever I fall and encouraging me to keep going.
May more people cherish this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to understand the truth and be saved by Dafa. Thank you, Master! Thank you, fellow practitioners who have lent me a helping hand!
