(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Sen from Baoding City, Hebei Province, has been detained in Beijing for over a month because he requested that his name be removed from the wanted list.
Mr. Liu is a software engineer with a Master’s degree. He found out about his wanted list status in August 2024, after officers from the Mentougou District Police Department in Beijing besieged his house for 24 hours. The police action was triggered by what happened on May 30, 2024, when he went to the police department to retrieve the items confiscated from his sister, Ms. Liu Meili, and her husband, Mr. An Chaoxu.
Ms. Liu and Mr. An were arrested in their Beijing residence on April 25, 2024, because they practice Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. Ms. Liu’s mother, Ms. Yu Shikun, a resident of Wangdu County (which is under the administration of Baoding City), was arrested on June 12, 2024, while visiting her son Mr. Liu in his Baoding residence. Ms. Yu also practices Falun Gong.
Ms. Liu, Mr. An, and Ms. Yu were convicted for practicing Falun Gong following a trial on January 24, 2025. Ms. Yu was sentenced to one and a half years and her daughter was sentenced to two years. They were both fined 2,000 yuan. Mr. An was given two years with three years probation.
When Mr. Liu went to the Mentougou District Police Department on May 30, 2024 to pick up the items confiscated from his sister and brother-in-law, officer Han Dong ordered him to sign and fingerprint a receipt. He did but he was not given a copy of the receipt. He asked to photocopy the receipt, but Han repeatedly refused.
Mr. Liu then took pictures of the returned items before taking a photo of himself with officers Han and Sun Dong and the items. He thought in case there were issues he would have the pictures as proof that the two officers handled the items.
When he realized Mr. Liu was taking pictures, officer Sun yelled, “Delete his photos!” Officer Han rushed over to snatch his phone and remove the pictures. Sun pointed a finger at Mr. Liu and threatened to arrest him as well.
Mr. Liu was terrified that the police camera was also recording everything but he didn’t believe he broke any law in taking pictures, because the police refused to give him a copy of the receipt. He explained this to the two officers.
A third officer reminded Han that the deleted photos were still in the recycle bin and not completely removed from Mr. Liu’s phone. Han couldn’t find the recycle bin and Sun said they could restore the phone to factory setting.
Mr. Liu was shocked that the police would go that far, so he showed Han where the recycle bin was. Han emptied it.
Sun still threatened to take Mr. Liu into custody. The lawyer who went with him stopped Sun from doing that.
Not long after the incident, Mr. Liu and his mother were arrested at his home on June 12, 2024, by officers from the Mentougou District Police Department and their counterparts from the Wusi Road Police Station in Baoding City.
Four officers restrained and videotaped the mother and the son, while the others searched the place. The police did not allow the mother and son to examine what was seized. They also did not provide a list of the confiscated items.
The police interrogated Mr. Liu and his mother separately at the Wusi Road Police Station. His mother was transferred to Beijing and put in criminal detention around 7 p.m. He was released that night. When Mr. Liu returned home, he realized his work computer, three cell phones, and four external hard drives were gone. He requested the confiscated items be returned, but his request was rejected by the police. As a software engineer, he struggled to do his job because so much information he needed had been stored in the confiscated computer.
The Mentougou District Police Department sent officers to monitor Mr. Liu’s home in August 2024 for one day. While he managed to escape being arrested, he learned from the local police station that the Beijing police had put him on the wanted list that month.
Mr. Liu lived in fear and could not work and communicate with his family or friends normally. He wanted to financially support his mother, sister and brother-in-law in their case, but he couldn’t renew his ID due to his being on the wanted list and was thus unable to withdraw money from his bank.
Mr. Liu decided to have himself removed from the wanted list. Accompanied by his father, he went to the Jiacun Town Police Station on May 6, 2025, only to be taken to Beijing hours later by officer Sun from the Mentougou District Police Department. He has since been held at the Mentougou District Detention Center.
His father, Mr. Liu Chunshui, in his 60s, struggles to cope, with his wife, daughter, and son-in-law sentenced for practicing Falun Gong. When he visited his wife in prison, he got so choked up that he couldn’t say a word.
