Ms. Wang’s Past Persecution
Ms. Wang, a retired factory worker, had many ailments, including headache, low blood pressure and she was sensitive to cold before she began practicing Falun Gong in 1998. She was able to enjoy good health and was full of energy.
After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Wang has been repeatedly targeted for holding firm to her faith and raising awareness about the persecution. She served two labor camp terms for a total of five years and was subjected to brutal torture.
Ms. Wang was arrested in June 2002, after she was reported for talking to people about Falun Gong on a bus. She was held at the Kunming City Second Detention Center. For a few days, she wasn’t given any food or drink. She was forced to work until midnight without pay. She only got two or three hours of sleep each day. Due to the abuse, she developed systemic edema two months later.
In mid-August 2002, Ms. Wang was transferred to the Dabanqiao Women’s Forced Labor Camp to serve a two-year term. The guards forced her to work in the farm field starting in September 2002. It was usual for detained practitioners to work until 2 or 3 a.m. and sometimes they had to work all night. They were not allowed to sleep until they finished the work. When her term ended on August 24, 2004, the labor camp term detained her for another 70 days before they released her. She was emaciated and her hair had turned completely gray.
Ms. Wang was arrested again one morning in August 2005. She was taken to the Yunnan Province Police Training Base. Every day in a confined room, two officers shouted at her and tried to force her to renounce Falun Gong. She held a hunger strike for three days and was force-fed.
Ms. Wang was reported by a neighbor for talking to him about Falun Gong in October 2006 and officers from the Bailong Police Station came the next day to raid her home. A few days later, she was deceived into going to the police station and she was arrested. She was taken to the Dabanqiao Women’s Forced Labor Camp to serve another three-year term.
At the third division, Ms. Wang was subjected to intensive brainwashing for four months. She held fast to Falun Gong and was sent to the stone processing factory to do free labor. She washed precious stones with strong alkaline water for at least 12 hours a day. Without proper personal protection equipment, her hands became burned and swelled. She was not allowed to eat until after 8 p.m. When she returned to her cell after a long day of work (sometimes at midnight), she still had to go through a strip-search and attend brainwashing sessions. The guards threatened to extend her term if she refused to cooperate.
Ms. Wang’s body weight dropped from 68 kg (150 lbs) to 30 kg (66 lbs) during the time she worked at the stone factory. She was so weak that she couldn’t straighten her back when she walked.
When Ms. Wang refused to attend the flag-raising ceremony she was beaten by a drug addict at the directives of the guards. Her front teeth were knocked out as a result.
In 2008, Ms. Wang was transferred to the factory that made paper cups. The guards stabbed her in the right eye on May 26, 2009, with the excuse that she didn’t follow their orders. Her face was covered with blood and the swelling in her eye didn’t go away until ten days later. The guards once covered her entire face including her mouth with tape. She almost suffocated to death.
Ms. Wang was released on February 4, 2010, after having her term extended by three months. The Bailong Road Police Station did not renew her household registration record until more than a year later. The police and residential committee staffers also harassed her on a regular basis, either in person or over the phone.
