Twice Jailed for a Total of 6.5 Years, 72-Year-Old Sichuan Woman Detained Again for Practicing Falun Gong

(Minghui.org) A 72-year-old resident of Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, was arrested on April 18, 2025, after being reported for talking to shoppers about Falun Gong at a farmers’ market.

The arresting officers from the Gongping Police Station raided Ms. Gu Suhua’s daughter’s home, where she has recently been living. They confiscated all her Falun Gong books and several music players. They did not tell her family where she was detained. Her loved ones found out on their own, that she was taken to the Wenjiang City Detention Center in Chengdu City, where she remains.

This is not the first time that Ms. Gu has been targeted for her faith, which she took up in June 2005 and credits for resolving her severe pulmonary heart disease. She was previously twice sentenced while she lived in Leshan City, Sichuan Province.

Ms. Gu was first arrested on July 13, 2010, for putting up Falun Gong flyers. The arresting officers from the Yulin Police Station raided her home together with officers from the local Niuhua Town Police Station. They seized her personal belongings, including 1,300 yuan in cash. The Jingyan County Court sentenced her to three years in December 2010. Her appeal was withheld by the local detention center and she was admitted to the Sichuan Province Women’s Prison in Chengdu City on March 29, 2011. She was brutally tortured and released on July 12, 2013.

While hanging up Falun Gong banners in the early hours of August 2, 2017, Ms. Gu and three other practitioners, including Ms. Zhang Guoxiu, Ms. Zhang Guilan, and Mr. Liu Bin, were arrested by officer Song Chuan from the Niuhua Town Police Station. He took them to the Leshan City Supervision Center.

The four practitioners were tried at the Wutongqiao District Court in Leshan City on May 8, 2018. They testified in their own defense but were still convicted at the end of the hearing. Ms. Gu was given three and a half years, Mr. Liu three years and five months, Ms. Zhang Guixiu one and a half years, and Ms. Zhang Guilan ten months.
