(Minghui.org) A 61-year-old woman in Wuhan City, Hubei Province is still being held at a brainwashing center, one month after she completed an eight-year prison term on April 25, 2025.
The ordeal of Ms. Zhu Ya, who is disabled, began on April 25, 2017, when she was arrested for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. While being held at a detention facility, she was beaten so hard that the back of her right hand was broken. Her family saw her wearing a cast when they visited her. The guards, however, forced her to tell her family that she had broken her hand by accident.
Ms. Zhu was sentenced to eight years with a 20,000-yuan fine in September 2018 and admitted to the Hubei Province Women’s Prison in Wuhan on September 12, 2019.
Ms. Zhu’s daughter arrived at the prison on April 25, 2025, to pick her up after eight long years. She was shocked that her mother had already been seized by agents from the Qianchuan Police Station, the Huangpi District 610 Office, the Huangpi District Justice Bureau, and the Jinxiu Community Office. They took her to the Wangjiahe Town Brainwashing Center and did not allow her daughter to see her.
An insider later revealed that the continued detention of Ms. Zhu was actually at the request of the prison. Before her release, the prison notified the aforementioned four agencies and told them to keep working on “transforming” her after her release, as she had been “stubborn” in holding firm to her faith.
To punish her, the prison put her in solitary confinement for long stretches of time on many occasions. When she was not in solitary confinement, she was forced to do hard labor, even after she became unable to walk due to torture. The guards had inmates push her wheelchair to the workshop to work from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. She had to stay there longer on days when she didn’t finish her tasks on time.
During shower times, she was always made to be the last one in line because she could not stand and had to sit on a bench to wash. Additionally, non-practitioner inmates were allowed to spend up to 300 yuan every month on daily necessities, while practitioners who gave up their belief under pressure could spend up to 150 yuan. Ms. Zhu, however, was not allowed to purchase any daily necessities because she held firm to her faith. The 500-yuan monthly deposits her family made to her commissary account were all confiscated by the prison.
Ms. Zhu’s family was also only allowed to visit her a few times during her entire eight-year term despite their repeated requests. The first time her family finally saw her in the prison was through a virtual meeting. During another visit, she told them that her leg was broken again after severe beatings. A guard immediately reprimanded her, “Who allowed you to say that?!” When her daughter came again in early 2024, Ms. Zhu could no longer walk due to foot injuries. Because a guard was right next her, she said she fell and broke her foot. It is unclear what other torture she had gone through during her prison term.
