(Minghui.org) The Minghui.org website recently confirmed that a 75-year-old Wuhan City, Hubei Province, resident had been sentenced to four years and fined 10,000 yuan in late 2024 for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Zhang Xiaohua, a retired librarian at Hubei University, was arrested at home on February 10, 2024, and held in the Wuhan City Brainwashing Center. Her family was kept in the dark about her case status, and didn’t learn about her verdict until recently.
Ms. Zhang has been repeatedly targeted for her faith since the persecution of Falun Gong started in 1999. She has been arrested at least 14 times and detained in various detention centers, brainwashing centers, labor camps, and prisons.
Ms. Zhang was first arrested by security personnel of Hubei University in October 2000, for spraying the words “Falun Dafa is good” at a public place. She was taken to the Wuhan City First Detention Center a few days later and held there for a month. She was subsequently given a 1.5-year term at the Hewan Forced Labor Camp. She was forced to work without pay and also had her salary suspended.
Ms. Zhang was arrested again in early 2004 by 610 Office agents and the university’s security personnel. She developed high blood pressure and rapid heart beat at the Tangxunhu Brainwashing Center and was released in serious condition.
After another arrest in March 2009 for talking to people about Falun Gong, Ms. Zhang was held at the Zhongxiang Detention Center for over a month, and later given another one-year labor camp term. She was allowed to serve time at home.
Ms. Zhang was arrested again on May 20, 2013, by officers from the Yangyuan Police Station. She was taken to the Erzhigou First Lockup the next day and held there for 15 days. On June 4, she was transferred to the Yangyuan Brainwashing Center, where the guards attempted to force her to renounce Falun Gong. They shouted at her so loudly that it could be heard outside the building. She was released three days later.
Only a few months after her release, on September 18, 2013, Ms. Zhang was arrested another time and taken to the Erzhigou Detention Center. She held a hunger strike to protest, but was still indicted.
Ms. Zhang appeared in the Caidian District Court on February 26, 2014, and was later sentenced to a four-year prison term. She served time in the Hubei Province Women’s Prison and was released on September 18, 2017.
Prior to her latest arrest in February 2024, she was arrested another time on November 25, 2023, while studying Falun Gong’s teaching with other practitioners. She was released that night, only to be arrested again in less than three months.
