(Minghui.org) Minghui.org previously reported on the ordeal of a Dashiqiao City, Liaoning Province, resident who has been suffering from a severe mental illness since she was released on parole in October 2004. New information has emerged to provide more details about the abuse she was subjected to in prison that resulted in her mental collapse.

Ms. Zhang Juxian, 61, was arrested in late September 2002 for distributing materials that exposed the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing persecution of her faith, Falun Gong. She went on a hunger strike while she was held at the Dashiqiao Detention Center, only to be force-fed feces and urine. After she was sentenced to three years on December 27, 2002, she was transferred to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison, where she faced even more torture.

While Ms. Zhang survived, she suffered a mental collapse and has not recovered. She often wandered the streets and picked food out of the dumpster. Some kindhearted people offered her clothes and food, but she usually didn’t take it. Due to her kind nature, she was often seen sweeping the street and cleaning the dumpster.

Her elderly mother tried to keep her at home and feed her. After her mother moved away in 2022, her younger sister took her in.

Ms. Zhang used to work for the Basan Pumping Station in Dashiqiao City. She took up Falun Gong in 1997 and her mind and body were uplifted. After the communist regime ordered a nationwide persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, she was fired from her job for upholding her faith. Her husband divorced her in June 2001 and was given custody of their child.

Ms. Zhang was repeatedly arrested prior to her latest arrest. She was held in a brainwashing center and served two labor camp terms, during which time she was forced to do intensive labor without pay, shocked with electric batons, and held in solitary confinement. She was also taken to a psychiatric hospital twice. See the second related report for details of her earlier persecution.

More About Her Prison Abuse

After another round of torture by guards Guo Haiyan and Zhao Xiumei in mid-June 2004, Ms. Zhang was severely injured and taken to the prison clinic. Wang Nina instructed the prison doctor and inmates to house Ms. Zhang with a hepatitis C patient in the same room. They next tied her up in a spread-eagle position.

Guards Guo and Zhao instructed inmates Zhu Qirong and Li Jirong to tape Ms. Zhang’s mouth shut and wrap her head tightly with cotton fabric with only her eyes and nose exposed. They beat her leaving bruises all over her body.

Ms. Zhang went on a hunger strike in protest and was force-fed by Zhu and Li, who had no medical training. They inserted the feeding tube into her nostril numerous times a day. After her nostrils were injured, they inserted the tube into her mouth, eventually damaging her throat as well. The tube had blood on it every time it was pulled out. The prison doctor was heard muttering to himself, “Her days are numbered.”

During the force-feeding, a lot of Ms. Zhang’s hair was pulled off and her lips became extremely swollen after being hit with the metal handle of a paper fan by Zhu. At one point she couldn’t even open her mouth.

By mid-August 2004, Ms. Zhang had been tortured to the point where she was unrecognizable. The prison clinic reported her condition to guard Zhao. She came over and yelled at Ms. Zhang from a corridor (as the room smelled badly), “When are you going to die? I’ve prepared your death clothes and I’m ready to send you to heaven now! What last words do you have to say?”

Inmate Zhu removed the tape from Ms. Zhang’s mouth. She shouted “Falun Dafa is good!” “Falun Dafa is righteous!” “Falun Gong practitioners are good people!” and “Don’t persecute Falun Gong practitioners!”

One night in October 2004, Ms. Zhang was covered with a white sheet and carried out of the prison hospital. When her family saw her, they thought she was dead. Luckily, she was still alive. But she was no longer the once healthy and bright woman. Due to the unimaginable torture in custody, she has suffered from severe mental illness since then.
