Ms. Zhang Airong drank a bowl of unknown liquid that the police claimed to be saline water after she was arrested in 2022 for practicing Falun Gong. Her health quickly declined and she passed away on December 19, 2024.

Falun Gong is a mind-body discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since 1999.

Ms. Zhang, of Changyi City, Shandong Province, was arrested at home around 5 a.m. on June 25, 2022, by four officers from the Yinma Police Station. They searched her place and confiscated some Falun Gong lecture DVDs, Falun Gong books, photo of Falun Gong’s founder, a computer, a tablet, and three speakers. They took her to the police station without allowing her to change.

Ms. Zhang’s family delivered some food to her in the morning, but it was withheld by the police. They sent more food to her during lunch time and the police allowed her to eat it. She was released at around 5 p.m., after being denied admission by the local detention center due to a medical condition. The police didn’t say what directly triggered her arrest.

Ms. Zhang was bruised due to the police violence during her arrest.

Ms. Zhang remained dizzy-headed for three days and was in low spirits. Her arms were bruised due to the police violence during her arrest.

After a few more days, officers from the Changyi City Domestic Security Office and Yinma Police Station arrested Ms. Zhang again and took her to the Changyi City Detention Center. An officer gave her a bowl of liquid and said it was saline water to help replenish her fluids. She didn’t think much about it and drank it. It tasted salty. The police ordered her to drink another bowl and she declined.

Ms. Zhang was released after ten days. Upon returning home, she couldn’t keep any food down and vomited everything she ate. She lost nearly 44 lbs (20 kg) in two months. She felt extremely weak and became exhausted after walking a few steps. During that period, the police came to her home many times and asked if she was experiencing any symptoms. Her family drove them away.

In late 2022, Ms. Zhang began to drink milk as her main food. After a while, she was able to eat, but she then experienced severe dizziness and numbness in her legs. One of her legs also became extremely swollen. She eventually died on December 19, 2024.

Past Persecution

Ms. Zhang had her home ransacked on April 14, 2017, by Cao Shuwen, the head of Changyi City 610 Office, Liu Chang’en, captain of Changyi City Domestic Security Office, Song Faxin, officer with the Yinma Police Station, and another man of unknown identify. While Song was videotaping the place, Cao and the unidentified man searched around, confiscating dozens of Falun Gong books, 800 blank DVDs, 300 DVD covers, a small molding machine, and some informational materials. None of them produced their IDs or search warrant, nor did they provide a formal list of confiscated items.

Ms. Zhang was arrested by Zuoshan Police Station officers on November 10, 2018. In the afternoon, the deputy chief An Tongqin led two officers to raid her home. They confiscated a laptop computer, a desktop computer, a cell phone, some charms, a few calendars and several diaries. She was released at around 8:20 p.m.

Ms. Zhang went to the Yinma Farmers’ Market on May 2, 2019 to distribute Falun Gong informational materials. She handed a copy to Liu Liping, who was hired by the police to fish for Falun Gong practitioners. Liu called the Yinma Police Station. Four officers came soon and took Ms. Zhang to the police station. They restrained her in a metal chair, not giving her any food or water. When she was finally allowed to use the restroom after strong protests, two officers followed her and didn’t allow her to close the door.

The police took Ms. Zhang home at noon for a search, but couldn’t enter as no one was in and they couldn’t find the key. They returned to the police station and transferred her to the Changyi Police Department at 5 p.m. Four officers held her hand to force her to fingerprint a document; her clothes was torn and her wrists were bruised. She was released at around 9 p.m. after the Changyi City Lockup refused to admit her.

CCP’s Long History of Involuntary Drug Administration of Falun Gong Practitioners

During the persecution of Falun Gong, involuntary administration of toxic drugs has been a major tactic to target those who refuse to renounce their faith. It is mostly done through injection or forced-feeding, often accompanied with electric shocks or tying up the victim’s limbs in excruciating positions.

After being administered these drugs, the practitioners often experienced varying degrees of sleepiness, weakness, sluggish speech and actions, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and rapid decline in memory. Additional symptoms include loss of reason, physiological disorders, lethargy, dementia, and mental breakdown. Some drugs directly hurt internal organs, causing such excruciating pain that the victims rolled all over the floor, suffered all-over body cramps, and felt as if all of their internal organs were bursting outside of the body. Extremely rapid heartbeat, chest and abdomen swelling, or organ failure were also reported. Some victims even slammed their heads against the wall due to the extreme pain. Some later passed away.

As of December 2021, at least 865 healthy practitioners have been held in mental hospitals as punishment at one point or another over the years.
