Mr. Chen Zhenlin, of Weihai City, Shandong Province, served a three-year labor camp term and was fired from his job, for simply upholding his faith in Falun Gong. He passed away on March 22, 2015. He was 62 years old.
Mr. Chen was arrested in September 2002, after being reported for raising awareness about the persecution of Falun Gong. He held a hunger strike in the detention center to protest. The guards cuffed him to a metal chair and force-fed him. As he refused to renounce Falun Gong, the authorities gave him a three-year term at the Wangcun Forced Labor Camp.
The labor camp guards deprived Mr. Chen of sleep and forced him to watch propaganda materials smearing Falun Gong. At night, they handcuffed him tightly, gagged him with a towel, and taped his mouth, then pinched the tendons in his legs and arms. He fainted several times due to the pain. He was also unable to walk for a period of time.
Several inmates also dragged him around, beat, and kicked him. He was denied use of the restroom, and not allowed to drink water. After he recovered a bit, he was forced to stand or sit on a small stool for long hours without moving. His buttocks festered from the sitting torture. In addition to the physical torture, he was also forced to work at least 18 hours a day without pay.
After being released on June 1, 2005, he was dealt another blow when his workplace fired him. Meanwhile, the local police and residential committee staffers kept coming to harass him. He once found a job, but the 610 Office soon forced his manager to fire him again. He could only do odd jobs or low-paying jobs to make a living. The hard work and mental distress took a further toll on his health, and he passed away on March 22, 2015.
