(Minghui.org) A Chongqing resident was sentenced to five years in 2024 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Dong Daoqun (also known as Dong Daoquan), in her 70s, is a retired machinery factory worker. She was arrested in January 2024 and Minghui.org learned of her prison sentence in January 2025. It is unclear when she was indicted, tried, or sentenced. Her detention location also remains to be investigated.
This is not the first time that Ms. Dong has been targeted for her faith. She previously served three forced labor terms and one prison term.
Ms. Dong was arrested on December 31, 1999, when she did the Falun Gong exercises in public. She was held at a detention center for an unknown time and ordered to write statements to renounce Falun Gong.
Ms. Dong went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in March 2000 and was arrested. After she was escorted back to Chongqing, she was given one year of forced labor. Not long after she was released in 2001, she was arrested again and given another three-year forced labor term.
Ms. Dong was arrested for the fourth time on July 19, 2008. Officers from the Lianshi Police Station took her to the Shengdengshan Brainwashing Center. One month later they transferred her to the Chongqing Women’s Forced Labor Camp, where she was detained until February 26, 2010.
After she was arrested on May 12, 2017, Ms. Dong was sentenced to two years and sent to the Chongqing Women’s Prison. Because she refused to renounce her faith she was brutally tortured. The prison guards forced her to wear a special pair of slippers and stand for long hours on end. The slippers were made of toxic materials and the skin on her feet turned black and became very itchy. The tiny spikes dotted the insoles of the slippers caused her feet to be in tremendous pain and she developed calluses.
The guards also subjected Ms. Dong to long-time sleep deprivation. On average, she only got to sleep up to 3 hours a night at most, and sometimes she was not allowed to sleep at all.
Another abuse tactic used to inflict harm on her was water deprivation. The guards gave her very little water to drink every day (sometimes no water at all). They also intentionally withheld water from her so she couldn’t wash herself. She was made to use the same bowl for every meal without being allowed to wash the bowl. When she used her hands to wipe the bowl, she was barred from washing her hands afterwards.
Ms. Dong was also not allowed to wash her face, brush her teeth, or take showers for long stretches of time. Once she had to go without showers for three weeks in the hot summer when the temperature hit 102oF. The guards also did not give her any toilet paper. She had to use her hands to wipe herself but was not allowed to wash her hands afterwards.
Becuase she could not wash herself, Ms. Dong eventually smelled badly. The long-time standing torture plus sleep deprivation further made her feel like her mind and body were pushed to the limit. She was on the verge of having a mental breakdown.
