(Minghui.org) Canadian Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhang Pixing was awarded the King Charles III’s Coronation Medal on January 17, 2025, for significant contributions to the fields of technology, and community service in Canada. The Governor General’s Office, in tandem with local governments and major organizations in Canada awarded the medals to outstanding individuals in commemoration of the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
The Government of Canada website states that the medal is awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region or community of Canada, or have made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.
Federal MP and member of the Federal Conservative shadow cabinet, Anna Roberts, presented the award on behalf of the federal government.

“It is a commendation for Falun Gong practitioners’ efforts in resisting the persecution for more than 20 years”
Zhang Pixing, who holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto, said that despite the Falun Gong community facing the most severe persecution for more than 20 years, mainstream Canadians are aware of their situation and appreciate their spirit.
“They also realize that what Falun Gong practitioners have done [in raising awareness of the persecution] over the years is not just for ourselves, but for justice and righteousness in the world, and for more people, and a better future for all. So this medal is a positive recognition and appreciation of the active efforts of Falun Gong practitioners over the past 20 years,” Mr. Zhang said.
He added that many senior Canadian government officials had recognized the great significance of Falun Gong practitioners’ efforts over a decade ago, even though the whole world was doing business with China [and turning a blind eye to the CCP’s human rights abuses].
Zhang mentioned that more elected officials and the world in general have finally recognized and reached a consensus on the true nature of the CCP, largely because of practitioners’ long-term exposure of the CCP’s ongoing human rights abuses—especially after the COVID-19 pandemic began. “The attitudes of many indifferent congressmen have also changed greatly. They also realize that the final encirclement and suppression of the CCP has arrived,” Zhang said.
Mainstream Society’s Support and Acceptance of Falun Gong
Twelve years ago, in May 2012, Zhang Pixing was awarded the Queen’s Medal for the first time for his contributions to the Chinese community.
Mr. Zhang recalled his first award twelve years ago. “Last time, the award was presented by the Federal Minister of Natural Resources,” he said. “I remember that most of the people who received the award were heads of large organizations. There were very few regular citizens who received the award. The winners this time are also very respected people in society. Grassroots people like us are very rare.”
Over the past more than 20 years, Mr. Zhang and other local Falun Gong practitioners have organized many activities to raise awareness, such as the annual Falun Dafa Day celebration, the “April 25” Peaceful Appeal Commemoration Day, the “July 20” rally against the persecution, candlelight vigils, and signature collection activities. He feels that his receiving the award reflects the respect and support that Canadians have always shown to the Falun Gong community, and that mainstream Canadians recognize that Falun Gong practitioners’ truth-clarification activities over the past 25 years are seen as contributions to Canadian society.
Mainstream Society’s Support for Shen Yun
Zhang Pixing also said, “Since she was elected in 2021, Federal MP Anna Roberts has come to the Shen Yun performance every year to present an award. Although she did not watch the performance last year, she drove for more than an hour from the suburbs to present the award. She is full of admiration and praise for Shen Yun and the true traditional Chinese culture [that it depicts]. She also especially thanked us Falun Gong practitioners for introducing Shen Yun to her.”
Chinese Peoples’ Attitudes are Changing
Although the CCP has been demonizing Falun Gong and carrying out hate propaganda for more than 20 years, the vast majority of Chinese people in Canada do not hold hatred or hostility towards Falun Gong—it is just that most are afraid of the CCP. “Many Chinese people take the initiative to make friends with us because they trust Falun Gong practitioners who follow the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance,” Mr. Zhang said.
In recent years, many leaders of Chinese organizations that were previously close to the Chinese Consulate have taken the initiative to contact local Falun Gong practitioners to dispel rumors that they are pro-communist. Chinese people have seen that the world situation is changing, and many are distancing themselves from the Chinese Consulate.
Falun Gong practitioners clarify the truth not only to the Chinese community, but also to the Hong Kong community, as well as to many Jewish, Indian, Pakistani, and Eastern European communities. Overall, although the CCP’s infiltration into Canada is still very deep, mainstream Canadians and the vast majority of local people have a very deep understanding of the CCP.
“Hope and dawn are just around the corner”
Mr. Zhang attributed his recent honor to all practitioners’ active participation in society over the years and their overall efforts for the betterment of all. “It is the friendship, trust, praise, and encouragement of the society,” he said. “After more than 20 years of persecution, it is not easy for any group. We know that hope and dawn are just around the corner.
“We Falun Gong practitioners will continue to work hard to stop the persecution of Falun Gong and to defend the free and healthy environment for Chinese people in Canada. We sincerely hope that we and many of our Canadian friends will celebrate when all Chinese people have the freedom to practice Falun Gong. We also hope that Shen Yun can perform in China soon!” Mr. Zhang said.
