The 64-year-old woman’s passing capped her years of suffering in the persecution of Falun Gong. Ms. Zhang was arrested on February 24, 2005 after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. After 26 days of detention at an unknown facility, she was given two years of forced labor and admitted to the Masanjia Labor Camp in March 2005.
She was subjected to various forms of abuse, including beatings, force-feeding, sleep deprivation, involuntary drug administration. Another practitioner also detained there once recounted what she witnessed:
Ms. Zhang was force-fed for more than twenty days and became emaciated. The guards cut her hair unevenly on purpose. She was held alone with monitors working in two shifts to watch her around the clock. She was not allowed to talk to others, eat at the cafeteria, shower, do laundry or purchase daily necessities.
Another practitioner also held in the same team once recounted what she witnessed:
“One night we were awoken by a commotion in the hallway. We got up to see what was going on. Two people were dragging Ms. Zhang, who was holding a basin. It turned out that she was washing her underwear and the monitors said she broke the rules. She argued that her underwear was too dirty and she had to wash it. They berated her and the team captain came to discipline her and extend her term by three days.
“She was later moved to another team for strict management as she held firm to her faith. We never saw her again.”
