Ms. Ma Juan, of Baoding City, Hebei Province, was arrested on August 16, 2010, by officers of the Chengguan Police Station. After two days at the local lockup, she was taken to the Shijiazhuang Women’s Forced Labor Camp. As she was found to have extremely high blood pressure, the labor camp doctor forced her to take medicine twice, yet her blood pressure remained elevated and she was denied admission. When releasing her, the police threatened that she must report to them whenever they called her.
Terrified by the police, Ms. Ma developed delusions. As soon as she closed her eyes, she saw the police taking a piece of paper for her to sign. She also became very nervous when she heard the sound of a car or saw a car. She was so scared that she didn’t dare to stay home and had to live outside for over 40 days. Not long after she returned, she had a cerebral hemorrhage. She was hospitalized twice and became incapacitated.
Ms. Ma was harassed at home again on August 16, 2017, when Kang Pinger, the village director, took away her Zhuan Falun, the main text of Falun Gong. After another harassment episode by Kang in just four days, Ms. Ma lost her appetite, her eyes became dull and she was in poor spirits. She was operated on in three weeks and became a vegetable afterward. Despite her condition, Kang still came back a few times to harass her. She died on February 28, 2018.
