(Minghui.org) A mother and daughter in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, completed a three-year-and-two-month prison term on August 9, 2024, to find themselves in a dire financial situation.
Ms. Wang Rongjun, a 74-year-old retired store sales associate, and her daughter, Ms. Na Yan, a nurse in her 40s, were both wrongly jailed for their faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Upon being released from prison, Ms. Na learned that she had been fired by her employer, the Shenyang City Sixth Hospital, during her prison term, without her knowledge. She requested a reinstatement of her job, but the hospital insisted that a “convicted felon” must be terminated.
Ms. Wang was issued her retirement benefits for an unknown portion of her prison term, but the local social security bureau later stopped the payments. After she was released in August 2024, the social security bureau still did not reinstate her pension, and ordered her to return the benefits paid during her prison term first, otherwise they would continue her pension payment suspension.
Arrests and Sentencing
Ms. Wang and Ms. Na were at their shared residence, when five officers from the Wusong Police Station, including Wang Haonan, Liu Bin, Yu Lei, Yu Yongxin, and Wang, broke in at around 6 p.m. on July 13, 2021. Two plainclothes agents from the Heping District Domestic Security Division later joined in the home raid.
The police confiscated the two women’s computer, laptop, two printers, four cell phones, four music players, one DVD player, one case of copy paper, and Falun Gong books.
Ms. Wang and Ms. Na were held at the Wusong Police Station overnight, and taken to the Shenyang City First Detention Center the following night. Ms. Na was found to have a fever and denied admission. The police tried three more times to detain her but failed. The police station chief eventually used his connections to get Ms. Na admitted on June 3, 2021.
The Liaozhong District Procuratorate issued formal arrest warrants for Ms. Wang and Ms. Na in July 2021, and the Liaozhong District Court held a virtual hearing three months later. The mother and daughter were both convicted in February 2022, each receiving three year and two month prison terms with 10,000-yuan fines. Their appeal was rejected by the Shenyang City Intermediate Court in June 2022, and they were admitted to the Liaoning Province Second Women’s Prison on February 15, 2023. They finished serving time on August 9, 2024.
