As a result of the persecution, Mr. Luo fell ill and became incapacitated. While he was being treated in the hospital in May 2012, the police showed up and took his cellphone and house key. They next went to the couple’s home and arrested Ms. Yao. She was taken to the Jinan Women’s Forced Labor Camp to serve another 1.5-year term.
Ms. Yao suffered excessive varginal bleeding at the labor camp and was then released. She had more bleeding at home and was extremely weak. Her family took her to the hospital and she was found to have late-stage uterine cancer.
Devastated bt Ms. Yao’s diagnosis and facing repeated police harassment, Mr. Luo’s own health quickly declined. He passed away in December 2014, at the age of 60. While still mourning his death, Ms. Yao passed away on February 8, 2015. She was 62.
