Ms. Wu Zhijin

After the persecution of Falun Gong started in 1999, the people who ran the kindergarten where Ms. Wu Zhijin taught often detained her during major holidays and anniversaries related to Falun Gong—sensitive days.

In April 2000, when she heard about the exhibition that defamed Falun Gong on display at the Beijing Military Museum, Ms. Wu traveled from Sanhe City, Hebei Province, to Beijing trying to clarify the facts about Falun Gong. She was arrested and taken back to Sanhe. The kindergarten fired her because she refused to renounce Falun Gong.

To make a living, she and her husband sold fruit. The authorities arranged forpeople to monitor her closely when she went out to prevent her from returning to Beijing to appeal.

Before the 2001 New Year, the township government sent four men to stay in her home for over three weeks. They smoked cigarettes all day long and used electric heaters even though they couldn’t afford to pay the utility bill.

On New Year’s day, an official showed up. He verbally abused Ms. Wu, slapped her in the face, and stomped on her chest. He then pushed her into her bedroom, saying, “You are being monitored and you don’t have any freedom.”

In mid-January 2001, officials took Ms. Wu to the township government. She held a hunger strike to protest and was transferred to the detention center. Although the detention center didn’t have any heat, the authorities didn’t let her bring her winter jacket. She was frozen and vomited blood. Only then did the police release her on the eve of the Chinese New Year.

Ms. Wu was arrested again at home on May 23, 2001. She was dragged for 50 meters (around 54 yards) to the police car, injuring her right thigh. The handcuffs cut into her wrists and the marks didn’t go away for a year.

The next day, Geng Desheng, the head of the detention center, drove Ms. Wu to the Kaiping Forced Labor Camp himself to serve a one-year term. Her family wasn’t notified of her detention location nor the length of her term.

As a result of the persecution, Ms. Wu died in February 2010. She was 53.
