Ms. Guo Qing Dies After Decades of Persecution for Her Faith

Ms. Guo Qing, 69, from Dandong City, Liaoning Province, died on August 8, 2023, after enduring years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) for decades.

Days before she died, the local police and community continued to harass Ms. Guo on the phone, attempting to make her renounce Falun Gong.

Ms. Guo was arrested in 2002 and paraded through the streets. She was later given two years of forced labor.

The Yuanbao District Court in Dandong City heard Ms. Guo’s case on November 9, 2013, following her arrest earlier that year. She was sentenced to three years and was brutally tortured at the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison. She was held in solitary confinement many times and forced to read, listen to, or watch propaganda slandering Falun Gong. The guards also tied her up in a bed in a spread-eagle position for long periods of time. Other forms of abuse inflicted on her included savage beatings, sleep deprivation, and being made to stand for extended periods of time.

On March 10, 2019, Ms. Guo went to a tourist attraction in Longtan Town, Youyan County, Anshan City to talk to visitors there about Falun Gong. Chief Liu Hui of the Longtan Town Police Station arrested her and took her to the Anshan City Lockup, where she was held for 15 days.

A woman from the Xinfeng Community Management Office where Ms. Guo lived, called her on August 19, 2020, and asked if she still practiced Falun Gong. She said yes and that her abdominal tumors disappeared after she began practicing. The woman asked Ms. Guo to sign several statements promising to stop practicing Falun Gong. When Ms. Guo refused the woman said she would visit her at home. Ms. Guo told her not to come, since she was not invited. She said that even if the woman came, she would not sign the statement.

Two officers from the Badao Police Station knocked on Ms. Guo’s door on September 28, 2021, claiming to verify her household registration information. After she opened the door, one officer whipped out his cell phone to take her picture, and the other one held a tape recorder to record their conversation.

They asked Ms. Guo to produce her household registration book. By the time she retrieved it, the two officers had already left. She looked down from her fifth-floor apartment window and saw them walking outside.

Ms. Guo yelled to them, “I’ve got my household registration book. Don’t you want to take a look?” The officers holding the cellphone waved his hand to say, “No.” Ms. Guo said they tricked her into opening the door and having her picture taken and voice recorded. She warned them not to harass her again.
