A Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province resident passed away on March 5, 2023, two years after she finished serving a four-year term for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. She was 59.

Ms. Niu Jinhua, a doctor of Chinese medicine, was arrested on June 20, 2017, and sentenced to four years by the Haizhou District Court. She began to experience abdominal pain while serving time in the Jiangsu Province Women’s Prison. She was released in June 2021 and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer one year later. She was operated on around September 2022 and died six months later.

Since the persecution started in 1999, Ms. Niu had been repeatedly targeted for her faith. She was arrested in December 1999 for going to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. After taking her back to Lianyungang, the police held her in a metal cage at the police station. The hospital she worked for also withheld her salary for six months. She was given one year of forced labor in 2001.

Two years after Ms. Liu was released, she was arrested again while at work on December 29, 2004, and later sentenced to three years. One year after her prison release, she was arrested another time on April 5, 2008, and sentenced to three years at the end of the year.
