A Gongyi City, Henan Province resident suffered in a delirious state and weak health after serving time for her faith in Falun Gong. Haunted by the torture she suffered in the prison, she often woke up from nightmares and lived in fear. After struggling with both physical and mental trauma for two and a half years, she passed away on January 23, 2020. She was 67.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Yan Shuhua took up Falun Gong in 1998, right after she was diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer. She soon regained her health and was full of energy.

After the onset of the persecution, Ms. Yan was repeatedly targeted for upholding her faith. She was given one year at the Zhengzhou Women’s Forced Labor Camp in August 2008. The incarceration took a toll on her health and left her traumatized.

While Ms. Yan recovered after resuming practicing Falun Gong upon returning home, she was dealt another heavy blow with her last arrest on April 1, 2014, after being reported for distributing Falun Gong materials. She was sentenced to three years and two months at the Xinxiang Women’s Prison, where she was subjected to intensive brainwashing and forced to do unpaid labor. She never recovered after being released and eventually succumbed to the trauma from the persecution.
