(Minghui.org) While a Taian City, Shandong Province, woman had not yet started to serve a prison term for her faith in Falun Gong, she was arrested again and given another term for her efforts to raise awareness about the persecution of her faith that the Chinese communist regime started in 1999.

Ms. Sun Jinhui, 48, was sentenced to two years and two months in September 2021 for displaying a calendar with information about Falun Gong in her photography studio. Due to poor health, she was denied admission to a local detention center and placed under temporary residential surveillance.

While distributing calendars with information about Falun Gong at a bus station on December 10, 2021, she was arrested again. The police interrogated her and collected a sample of her blood against her will. The Taishan District Police Department placed her under residential surveillance for six months and released her.

On May 20, 2022, when the six-month residential surveillance expired, Tian Lin, a Taishan District 610 Office director, informed Ms. Sun that they had submitted her case to the Taishan District Procuratorate. Five officers broke into Ms. Sun’s home on June 10 and took her to the procuratorate, where she was placed under residential surveillance for another six months.

The police went to Ms. Sun’s home again at 7 a.m. on July 5, 2022, and took her to the Taishan District Court, where they handed her the indictment and a notice for her to appear in court on July 20.

On the day of the hearing, Ms. Sun refused to be represented by the court-appointed lawyer since she had never met with the lawyer before. She insisted on acting as her own lawyer. Presiding judge Shen Yuxian didn’t approve her request, accused Ms. Sun of not cooperating, and adjourned the session.

Ms. Sun told officer Zhang Qingmin, who was escorting her home, that over ten years ago, her husband helped a friend apply for a loan of over one million yuan. When the friend’s business failed, he ran away and the bank came after her husband. She and her husband worked together to pay off the debt. They sold their house and stayed with a relative. She said if she didn’t practice Falun Gong, she wouldn’t have done that. She asked Zhang not to harass her anymore.

The judge announced Ms. Sun’s verdict on August 3, sentencing her to three years with a 10,000-yuan fine. Combined with her previous sentence, she now has five years and two months to serve and a 20,000-yuan fine to pay.

Ms. Sun has yet to be taken into custody and is appealing the verdict.
