(Minghui.org) An 81-year-old retired chief nurse in Kunming City, Yunnan Province is facing prosecution for giving a calendar bearing information about Falun Gong to a former colleague a year ago.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Li Yanyun met with a former colleague on September 27, 2021 and gave her a calendar about Falun Gong, only to be reported by the colleague’s son, who was working for the Ministry of State Security.

Qiu Xueyan, head of the Xishan District Domestic Security Office, along with four officers from the Donglu Police Station, broke into Ms. Li’s home the next day and arrested her. Her hundreds of Falun Gong books and four photos of Falun Gong’s founder were confiscated. She was taken to the police station to be interrogated.

After a thorough physical examination, Ms. Li was taken to the Kunming City Detention Center on September 29, 2021. Due to her advanced age and serious symptoms of emphysema (damaged air sacs of the lungs) and vascular sclerosis, the guards refused to admit her. She was released in the afternoon after paying a 1,000 yuan bail bond.

The police constantly harassed her during her one-year bail period. In July 2022, an officer surnamed Ma summoned Ms. Li and told her that according to an order from above, they were submitting her case to the Xishan District Procuratorate.

Ms. Li was summoned by the police again on August 8. She refused to answer any questions. The police claimed that she had violated the law according to the policies by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.

Ms. Li told the police that no law has ever criminalized Falun Gong in China. She said she didn’t do anything wrong, and that the police were violating the law in persecuting Falun Gong. She also refused to sign the deposition.

Two prosecutors from the Xishan District Procuratorate interviewed Ms. Li around mid-October. She told them that the police had violently ransacked her home, broken her drawer, and confiscated a large number of her personal belongings.

One prosecutor said to her, “If you plead guilty, we can ask for a lighter sentence against you. If not, you’ll face a heavy punishment.”

Ms. Li responded, “I didn’t violate any law in practicing Falun Gong. Why do I have to plead guilty? I’m 81 now and still enjoy good health thanks to Falun Gong. I live by Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance. It’s beneficial for my family, society, and government. What’s wrong with my giving a calendar to my colleague?”

Before leaving, the prosecutors ordered Ms. Li to sign her deposition, but she refused.
