(Minghui.org) Two women in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, were sentenced to prison in November 2021 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Zhang Cuijuan, 48, and Ms. Liu Xiuying, 74, were arrested on July 21, 2020, for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong near their residence. Both of their homes were ransacked.
Ms. Liu was released on bail on August 10, while Ms. Zhang remains detained at the Huadu District Detention Center. Ms. Zhang’s arrest was approved on August 26. The police also accused Ms. Zhang of distributing materials earlier on February 14, 2018, and putting up posters with Ms. Liu at several bus stations and on utility poles on May 27, 2020. Ms. Liu was also accused of distributing materials by herself on February 21 and 27, 2020.
The Liwan District Court, which was assigned to handle Falun Gong cases in Guangzhou, sentenced both women to 3.5 years with 5,000 yuan fines on November 15, 2021. It’s not clear whether Ms. Liu has been taken back into custody.
According to information collected by Minghui, at least 70 Falun Gong practitioners were sentenced in Guangdong in 2021 and 94 were arrested or taken to brainwashing centers.
This isn’t the first time that Ms. Liu has been targeted for her faith. She was sentenced to 3.5 years in December 2005 by the Baiyun District Court in Guangzhou and given 15-day detentions twice on April 6 and November 13, 2013.
