(Minghui.org) A Beijing resident in her 50s was transferred to Tiantanghe Women’s Prison on November 18, 2021, after her appeal against a 3.5-year prison term for practicing Falun Gong was rejected by the higher court.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Jia Fengzhi was arrested on November 9, 2019 for distributing calendars bearing information about Falun Gong. The police submitted her case to the Pinggu District Procuratorate on February 5, 2020 and she was indicted on March 20.
Ms. Jia was tried by the Pinggu District Court on August 11, 2020 at the Pinggu Detention Center. Her lawyer entered a not guilty plea for her. Her family wasn’t allowed to attend her hearing.
Ms. Jia’s family learned on September 7, 2020 that she was sentenced to 3.5 years and fined 35,000 yuan.
She appealed with the Beijing Intermediate Court and judge Li Yongjing ruled to uphold her original verdict. She was taken to the Tiantanghe Women’s Prison on November 18, 2021, after two years at the Pinggu Detention Center. A prison guard said to her upon her admission that the persecution of Falun Gong in Beijing is most severe in their prison.
