(Minghui.org) A 76-year-old woman was sentenced to six years for raising awareness about the persecution of her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been targeted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Wen Yuyan, of Jilin City, Jilin Province, was arrested on June 21, 2020 after being reported for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong at a market. The police ransacked her home on the next day and confiscated her Falun Gong books, contact book, MP3 player and 44 yuan in cash.

An officer of the Wulajie Police Station called her daughter, who was working in Beijing, on June 23 and attempted to extort 2,700 yuan from her. As her daughter refused to pay the money, the police tried to detain her at the Jilin City Detention Center, which refused to accept her due to her advanced age. She was later released on bail.

The police harassed Ms. Wen two more times, on October 15 and 16, respectively. Weeks later, she was taken to the local procuratorate to sign her indictment.

Ms. Wen was secretly sentenced to six years between June and July 2021. She has been taken to the Jilin City Detention Center.

Past Persecution

Ms. Wen began to practice Falun Gong in 1999, shortly before the persecution began on July 20 that year. She went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on December 13, 2000 and was given one year of forced labor.

Ms. Wen was arrested again on March 18, 2016 for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. After nine months at the Jilin City Detention Center, she was sentenced to three years probation. Days later, she was forced to write a statement to renounce Falun Gong and released on December 14. The authorities continued to monitor her daily activities and phone calls.

The residential committee director harassed Ms. Wen on the morning of September 18, 2017 and took her pictures. Staff members of the local justice bureau came in the afternoon, also taking her photos and threatening her not to go out to distribute Falun Gong materials.
