Beijing Resident Still Detained Seven Weeks After Arrest for His Faith

Sept. 8, 2020 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Beijing, China

(Minghui.org) A Beijing resident has been detained for more than a month for his faith in Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline based on the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance.

Mr. Li Zongze was targeted in a group arrest of Falun Gong practitioners on July 19, 2020, one day before the 21st anniversary of the Chinese communist regime's persecution of Falun Gong that began on July 20, 1999.

As the police didn’t inform Mr. Li’s family of his whereabouts, it took them two weeks to find out he was being detained at the Dongcheng District Detention Center.

Mr. Li’s family went to the Hepingli Police Station on August 3 to inquire about his case.

Wu Weiyang, the officer handling Mr. Li’s case, first refused to meet with his family but later relented upon their strong demand. Wu refused to provide any information and only gave Mr. Li’s detention notice to his family. He also refused to return the keys to Mr. Li’s rental apartment to his family.

Mr. Li’s lawyer visited him at the detention center on August 13. He was in good spirits during their meeting.

The lawyer mailed a legal letter to the police around August 20, urging them to drop Mr. Li’s case.

Mr. Li’s family followed up with the police about his case status on August 28, but they haven’t received any updates at the time of writing.
