(Minghui.org) An 85-year-old Jilin City, Jilin Province, man was admitted to Jilin Prison on August 6, 2020, to serve a six-year term for practicing Falun Gong despite his poor health.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Guo Yunian was arrested at home around 5 a.m. on July 19, 2019. When he failed the physical exam and the local detention center refused to admit him later that day, the police fined him 2,000 yuan and released him on bail.
Mr. Guo appeared in court in early November 2019 and was sentenced to six years later that month.
The police took him back to the hospital for two more physicals, but he failed both times and the detention center wouldn’t take him. He was ordered to pay for the exams, which totaled several thousand yuan.
Officer Li Leiyu of Xin’an Police Station went to see Mr. Guo in early July 2020 and ordered him to submit to one more exam. The detention center still refused to accept him due to his poor health and the police had to let him go.
On August 6, 2020, the police took Mr. Guo to Jilin Prison. His family wasn’t allowed to visit him or send him clothes or daily necessities. It’s not clear whether he was given an additional physical before his imprisonment.
