(Minghui.org) A mother and daughter convicted for their faith in Falun Gong were taken back into custody in June 2020 and imprisoned in August 2020.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Yang Xiuyun, 75, and her daughter, Ms. Li Yangbo, 47, residents of Baicheng City, Jilin Province, were arrested on October 10, 2017. They were later released on bail due to their medical conditions, including Ms. Yang's extremely high blood pressure.

Mother and daughter were tried at home by the Daan City Court on June 11, 2018 and both were sentenced to two years with a 5,000-yuan fine on July 17. They appealed their cases to the Baicheng City Intermediate Court on July 22 and saw their verdicts upheld following a hearing on September 22.

The Daan City Court delivered the intermediate court’s ruling to Ms. Li’s workplace, the Tielu First Elementary School, on November 17. The school terminated her employment contract immediately upon receiving the verdict.

The police attempted to send Ms. Li and her mother to prison on July 4, 2019 after forcing them to go through physical examinations. But the Jilin Province Women’s Prison rejected their admission, due to Ms. Yang’s dangerously high blood pressure and Ms. Li’s blood disorder.

The Daan City Court ordered to have the two women taken back to a local detention center in June 2020 and then to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison in August.

Ms. Yang and Ms. Li took up Falun Gong in 1996 and 2005, respectively. Both of them credit the practice for giving them good health, especially curing Ms. Li’s life-threatening aplastic anemia that left her with excessive fatigue and extreme vulnerability to infections.

Prior to Ms. Yang’s latest term, she was arrested on January 24, 2007 for distributing information about Falun Gong and was sentenced to three years.
