Taiwan and Macau: Candlelight Vigils Solemnly Mark 20 Years of Persecution
(Minghui.org) In solemn commemoration of Falun Gong practitioners who have died as a result of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) 20-year-long persecution of their faith, practitioners across the world organize events such as peaceful rallies and candlelight vigils.
Former CCP leader Jiang Zemin ordered the violent suppression of Falun Gong on July 20, 1999. Falun Gong is a mind-body cultivation practice based on the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance.
The Minghui website has confirmed the deaths of over 4,000 Falun Gong practitioners due to the persecution over the past 20 years. However, the actual number is suspected to be much higher. Evidence also indicates that the CCP continues to harvest of from detained practitioners, who are murdered to supply China’s organ transplant industry.
Candlelight Vigil in Tainan, Taiwan
Falun Gong practitioners in Tainan held a candlelight vigil at Dongning Park on the evening of July 20, 2019. Several city council members attended the event to express their support and condemn the persecution in China.

Lee Chi-wei, a member of the Tainan City Council, strongly condemned the CCP’s long-term persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. He said, “The CCP’s persecution of Falun Gong practitioners is quite wrong. People should have the basic freedom of belief. The CCP will be sanctioned for its persecution of religions.”
Lee Wen-cheng, a former member of the Tainan City Council, said that the CCP’s persecution of Falun Gong is a very serious matter. He pointed out that Falun Gong has received great recognition in China and around the world, but it has been persecuted by the Communist Party.
As the persecution enters its 20th year, Lee called on the world's people to stand up, pay attention to the persecution, and support practitioners’ efforts against it.

Waterfront Park is one of Taitung's popular scenic attractions and draws many tourists, who took photos of practitioners and stopped to learn more about Falun Gong.
