Guangzhou Woman Sentenced to Two Years After Helping Man Who Fainted and Introducing Her Faith to Him
(Minghui.org) A woman from Guangzhou City was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 5,000 yuan after helping a man who fainted on the street and giving him an informational card about Falun Gong after he came to.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a meditation and spiritual discipline based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. It has been severely persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999 due to its immense popularity shortly after its introduction to the public in 1992.
Ms. Dong Lijuan, 56, rushed over and helped the man when she saw him collapse in front of a pharmacy store on January 17, 2017. After he regained consciousness, she gave him a small card about Falun Gong and said that reciting “Falun Dafa is good, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good” might help him and bring him good luck.
Two security guards nearby overheard the conversation about Falun Gong. They came over, searched Ms. Dong's bag, and took her to Changgang Police Station. She was later transferred to Haizhu District Detention Center. Her arrest was approved by the procuratorate.
Ms. Dong's arrest came only 28 days after her husband passed away after suffering years of complications from a stroke he had in 2008. Their 17-year-old daughter was dealt another heavy blow while still mourning her father's death.
Ms. Dong appeared at Haizhu District Court on May 17, 2018. She was given the prison sentence on January 16, 2019, two years after her arrest. As she had already been held in custody for two years, she was released after the sentencing hearing.
