(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Liu Caifan was sentenced by the Jingan District Court to one year in prison on October 9, 2018.

Ms. Liu, 72, from Shanghai, was reported to the authorities for talking to people about Falun Gong at Liangcheng Park on February 8, 2018. A Domestic Security officer arrested her and took her to the Liangcheng Police Station.

The police ransacked her home, but could not find anything to corroborate an offense. They then went to her sister's home and tried to break in when no one answered the door.

Ms. Liu's sister was hospitalized with late-stage cancer and passed away while she was being held in the detention center. Ms. Liu was not allowed to attend her sister's funeral.

Her lawyer requested twice to see her case file and meet with her, but the Domestic Security officer in charge refused the request.

Ms. Liu was tried on October 9, 2018. Her lawyer was frequently interrupted during the trial whenever he spoke. The court sentenced Ms. Liu to one year of imprisonment because “she was against communism.”

Ms. Liu's husband was told that the sentence had been predetermined by higher authorities, so nothing could be done.

Ms. Liu began practicing Falun Gong in 1999. She was arrested for the first time in 2008 by Hongkou District Domestic Security officers Lu Jinlong and Li Chenhua, for talking to people about the practice.

She was taken to the Liangcheng Police Station where Li repeatedly hit her arms and legs with a tennis racket. He also punched her spine, causing her back to be permanently disfigured even to this day. She was later sentenced to three-and-half years in prison.
